പിതാക്കന്മാരെയും പിതൃബന്ധത്തെയും സമൂഹത്തിൽ പിതാക്കന്മാരുടെ സ്വാധീനവും ബഹുമാനിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ആഘോഷമാണ് പിതൃ ദിനം. കത്തോലിക്കാ യൂറോപ്പിൽ മധ്യകാലഘട്ടം മുതൽ മാർച്ച് 19 ന് (സെന്റ് ജോസഫ്സ് ഡേ) ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ ആഘോഷം സ്പാനിഷ്, പോർട്ടുഗീസ് തുടങ്ങി ലാറ്റിനമേരിക്കൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ എത്തിച്ചേർന്നു. യൂറോപ്പിലെയും അമേരിക്കയിലെയും പല രാജ്യങ്ങളും യുഎസ് തീയതിയായ ജൂൺ മാസത്തെ മൂന്നാമത്തെ ഞായറാഴ്ചയാണ് പിതൃ ദിനമായി സ്വീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. കത്തോലിക്കാ യൂറോപ്പിൽ പിതൃ ദിന ആഘോഷം കുറഞ്ഞത് മദ്ധ്യകാലഘട്ടങ്ങൾ മുതൽതന്നെ ആരംഭിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇത് മാർച്ച് 19 ന്, സെന്റ് ജോസഫ് എന്ന ഉത്സവത്തോടനുബന്ധിച്ച് തെക്കേ യൂറോപ്യൻ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിൽ ഓരോ കത്തോലിക്കാവിശ്വാസിയും "യേശുവിന്റെ പിതാവ്" എന്ന് വിളിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകൊണ്ട് പിതൃദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. ഈ ആഘോഷം അമേരിക്കക്കാരാണ് കൊണ്ടുവന്നതെങ്കിലും സ്പാനിഷ്, പോർച്ചുഗീസ്, ലാറ്റിൻ അമേരിക്ക എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും കണ്ടുവരുന്നു. മാർച്ച് 19-നും പിതാവിന്റെ ദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പതിനാലാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ അവസാന വർഷങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നോ പതിനഞ്ചാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ നിന്നോ, ഫ്രാൻസിസ്കൻസിന്റെ മുൻഗാമിയിൽ നിന്നോ, സെന്റ് ജോസഫ് ദിനത്തിൽ ജന്മദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ആചാരത്തെ കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭ സജീവമായി പിന്തുണച്ചു.
