ഏതാണ്ട് ആയിരത്തോളം വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു മുൻപ് വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്നും[49][50][51] ഉൽഭവിച്ച് മധ്യേഷ്യയിലേക്കും അവിടെ നിന്നും യൂറോപ്പിലേക്കും അമേരിക്കയിലേക്കും വ്യാപിച്ചതും, പാരമ്പരാഗതമായി നാടോടികൾ ആയതുമായ ജനവിഭാഗത്തെയാണ് റൊമാനി ജനത (Romani people) എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നത്. Romany; /ˈrməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), അല്ലെങ്കിൽ Roma, ജിപ്സികൾ എന്നീ വിവിധ പേരുകളിൽ ഇവർ അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ രാജസ്ഥാൻ, ഹരിയാന, പഞ്ചാബ് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാവണം ഇവർ യാത്ര ആരംഭിച്ചതെന്ന് വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[50][51] ഇന്ത്യയിലും എസ്തോണിയയിലും നടത്തിയ ഡി എൻ എ ഗവേഷണങ്ങളിൽ ലഭിച്ച ഫലങ്ങൾ പ്രകാരം റൊമാനി ജനതയും സിന്ധി ജനങ്ങളും തൊട്ടുകൂടാൻ പാടില്ലാത്ത ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ദളിതവിഭാഗങ്ങളുടെ പിന്മുറക്കാർ ആണെന്നാണ്.[52]

ജനിതകശാസ്‌ത്രപരമായ കണ്ടെത്തലുകൾ സ്ഥിരീകരിക്കുന്നത് "ഏകദേശം 1,500 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഇന്ത്യ വിട്ടുപോയ ഒരൊറ്റ ഗ്രൂപ്പിൽ നിന്നാണ്" ഇവരുടെ ഉദയം എന്നാണ്.[53] ‘യൂറോപ്യൻ ജേണൽ ഓഫ് ഹ്യൂമൻ ജനിറ്റിക്സിൽ’ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിച്ച ജനിതക ഗവേഷണം 70% പുരുഷന്മാരും റോമയിൽ മാത്രമായി കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരൊറ്റ വംശത്തിൽ പെട്ടവരാണെന്ന് വെളിപ്പെടുത്തി.[54] അവർ അന്യോന്യം ചിതറിപ്പോയ ഒരു ജനതയാണെന്നുവരികിലും അവരുടെ ഏറ്റവും ബൃഹത്തായ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ളത് യൂറോപ്പിലാണ്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് മധ്യ, കിഴക്കൻ, തെക്കൻ യൂറോപ്പിലാണ് (തുർക്കി, സ്പെയിൻ, തെക്കൻ ഫ്രാൻസ് എന്നിവയുൾപ്പെടെ). വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിൽ നിന്നു റോമാനികൾ ഉത്ഭവിക്കുകയും ഏകദേശം 1,000 വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുമ്പ് പശ്ചിമേഷ്യയിലും യൂറോപ്പിലും എത്തിപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.[55] അവർ മറ്റൊരു ഇന്തോ-ആര്യൻ ഗ്രൂപ്പായ ഡോം ജനതയുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു: രണ്ട് ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളും പരസ്പരം വേർപിരിഞ്ഞതായും അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കുറഞ്ഞത് സമാനമായ ചരിത്രം പങ്കിടുന്നതായും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു.[56] ആറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനും പതിനൊന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിനും ഇടയിൽ റൊമാനികളുടേയും ഡോമിന്റെയും പൂർവ്വികർ ഉത്തരേന്ത്യ വിട്ടുവെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[57]

ജിപ്സികൾ (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ജിപ്സീസ്) എന്ന പേരിലാണ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നവർക്കിടയിൽ റൊമാനി ജനത വ്യാപകമായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ വാക്ക് നിയമവിരുദ്ധതയുടെയും ക്രമക്കേടിന്റെയും അർത്ഥങ്ങൾ ദ്യോതിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു കാരണം ഇത് അവഹേളനപരമായ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. 1888 മുതൽ ജിപ്‌സി ലോർ സൊസൈറ്റി അവരുടെ ജീവിതശൈലിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള അഭ്യൂഹങ്ങളെ തുരത്തുന്നതിനായി ഒരു ജേണൽ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.[58]

വ്യാപകമായി യൂറോപ്പിലെങ്ങും വിതരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന ഈ ജനവിഭാഗം 19 -ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടു മുതൽ അമേരിക്കയിലേക്കും കുടിയേറിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിൽ 10 ലക്ഷത്തോളം റൊമാനി ജനത ഉണ്ടെന്നു കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.[6] ബ്രസീലിൽ ഇവരുടെ അംഗസംഖ്യ 800,000 ആണ്. അവരുടെ പൂർവ്വികരിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗവും പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കിഴക്കൻ യൂറോപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് കുടിയേറിയവരാണ്. പോർച്ചുഗീസ് മതദ്രോഹവിചാരണ വേളയിൽ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്താൽ നാടുകടത്തപ്പെട്ട ആളുകളുടെ പിൻഗാമികളായ ഒരു റൊമാനി സമൂഹവും ബ്രസീലിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു. പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ അവസാനത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള കുടിയേറ്റങ്ങളിൽ, റൊമാനികൾ തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിലെ മറ്റു രാജ്യങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കും കാനഡയിലേക്കും പോയി.

2016 ഫെബ്രുവരിയിലെ അന്തർദേശീയ റൊമാനി കോൻഫറൻസിൽ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ വിദേശകാര്യ മന്ത്രാലയം റൊമാനി ജനത ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മക്കളായിരുന്നെന്നും ഇന്ത്യൻ സർക്കാർ ഇവരെ മറ്റുരാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന ഇന്ത്യക്കാരായി കരുതണമെന്നും പറയുകയുണ്ടായി.[59]

പല ഭാഷാഭേദങ്ങളായി വിഭജിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്ന റൊമാനി ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരുടെ എണ്ണം ഏകദേശം രണ്ട് ദശലക്ഷത്തിലധികമാണെന്നും കണക്കാക്കുന്നു.[60] മൊത്തം റൊമാനി ജനങ്ങളുടെ എണ്ണം കുറഞ്ഞത് കണക്കുകൂട്ടിയിട്ടുള്ളതിലും പല മടങ്ങ് അധികമാണ് (ഉയർന്ന മതിപ്പുകണക്ക്‌ അനുസരിച്ച് നിരവധി മടങ്ങ് ഉയർന്നത്). പല റൊമാനികളും അവരുടെ രാജ്യത്ത് പ്രബലമായ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരോ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ പ്രബലമായ ഭാഷയെ റൊമാനി ഭാഷാഭേദവുമായി സംയോജിപ്പിച്ച മിശ്രിത ഭാഷകൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവരുമാണ്. ഈ മിശ്ര ഭാഷായിനങ്ങൾ ചിലപ്പോൾ പാരാ-റൊമാനി എന്നും വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.[61]
