പ്രകാശത്തിനോടുള്ള അസാധാരണമായ അസഹിഷ്ണുത കാണിക്കുന്ന ഒരു മെഡിക്കൽ ലക്ഷണമാണ് ഫോട്ടോഫോബിയ.[1] ഫോട്ടോഫോബിയയിൽ വെളിച്ചത്തിലേക്ക് നോക്കുമ്പോൾ വേദനയും അസ്വസ്ഥതയും ഉണ്ടാകും.[2] ഹീലിയോഫോബിയ പോലുള്ള പ്രകാശത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള യുക്തിരഹിതമായ ഭയം വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കാനും ഈ വാക്ക് ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും യഥാർഥത്തിൽ ഇത് മറ്റ് ഫോബിയകളിൽ എന്നപോലെയുള്ള അകാരണഭീതി അല്ല.[3] വെളിച്ചം എന്ന് അർഥം വരുന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് വാക്ക് φῶς (ഫോസ്), ഭയം എന്ന അർഥം വരുന്ന φόβος (ഫോബോസ്) എന്നീ വാക്കുകളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഫോട്ടോഫോബിയ എന്ന വാക്ക് ഉണ്ടായത്. വിഷ്വൽ സ്നോയുടെ ഒരു സാധാരണ ലക്ഷണമാണ് ഫോട്ടോഫോബിയ.[4] [5]

മൈഗ്രെയ്ൻ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ സീഷ്വർ ഡിസോർഡർ പോലുള്ള കഠിനമായ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ വിട്ടുമാറാത്ത ഫോട്ടോഫോബിയ ഉള്ള ഒരു വ്യക്തിക്ക് കണ്ണ് വേദന, തലവേദന, കൂടാതെ/അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കഴുത്ത് വേദന എന്നിവ മൂലം പ്രയാസങ്ങൾ അനുഭവപ്പെടും. പ്രകാശ സ്രോതസ്സിലേക്ക് വ്യക്തി പിന്നീട് നോക്കാതിരുന്നാലും ഈ ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ദിവസങ്ങളോളം നിലനിൽക്കും.
