രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധത്തിനു ശേഷമാണ് സോണി എന്ന വ്യാപാരസംരംഭത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യകാലപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. 1946 ൽ ടോക്കിയോയിലെ ഒരു ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ്സ്റ്റോറിലെ ഇലക്ട്രോണിക് സ്റ്റോറിൽ മാസാരു ഇബുക എന്ന വ്യക്തിയാണ് ഇതിനു തുടക്കം കുറിച്ചത്.[24].190,000 യെൻ മൂലധനവും മൊത്തം എട്ടു തൊഴിലാളികളും ആണ് തുടക്കത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്.[25]പിന്നീട് അകിയോ മോറിതയും ഇബുകയുടെ സംരംഭത്തിനു കൂട്ടാളിയായി.[26][27] ടോക്കിയോ ടെലികമ്മ്യൂണിക്കേഷൻ എഞ്ചിനീയറിങ് കോർപ്പറേഷൻ എന്ന കമ്പനിയ്ക്കു രൂപം നൽകി. ടൈപ്പ്-ജി എന്ന പേരിലുള്ള ജപ്പാനിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ ടേപ്പ് റെക്കോർഡർ നിർമ്മിച്ചതും ഈ കമ്പനിയാണ്[28]. 1958 ൽ കമ്പനിയെ സോണി എന്നു നാമകരണം ചെയ്തു.[29]
