Tickets are available at all railway stations across Bangladesh. Most railway stations are computerised and connected to a central network. Printed tickets are provided to the passengers. Tickets can be bought four days ahead of departure. Full refunds (excluding clerical charges) are available up to 48 hours before departure.

BR introduced online ticketing in 2012. The railway reserves 10% of the ticket inventory for online sales, 15% of which is reserved for mobile only clients.[23]

The railway has been facing tough competition with other modes of transport. As a national carrier, BR is obliged to carry essential commodities like grain, fertiliser etc. to remote corners of the country for cheap prices.

Bangladesh Railway transports containers from Port of Chittagong to Dhaka ICD.[24] The special flat wagons required for container movement were initially fashioned from existing wagons. An Inland Container Depot has been opened in Dhaka with customs and port facilities for clearance of container traffic. A dedicated (exclusive) container train was introduced on 5 August 1991. Since then, the volume of container traffic has grown considerably.
