ഈജിപ്തിലെ മുൻ പ്രസിഡന്റായ അബ്ദുൾ നാസർ, 1956 ജൂലൈ 26 നു സൂയസ് കനാൽ ദേശസാത്കരിച്ചതോടെയാണ് സൂയസ് പ്രതിസന്ധി അഥവാ (Suez Crisis) ഉടലെടുത്തത്. ഫ്രഞ്ച്-ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് താത്പര്യങ്ങൾ സംരക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്ന സൂയസ് കനാൽ കമ്പനിയാണ് സൂയസ് കനാലിന്റെ മേൽനോട്ടം വഹിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഈജിപ്ത് ഒരു ഭാഗത്തും, ഇസ്രയേൽ, അമേരിക്ക, ഫ്രാൻസ്, ബ്രിട്ടൻ മറുഭാഗത്തുമായി സൈനിക നീക്കങ്ങൾ രൂപം കൊണ്ടു.
