ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഡാർജിലിങിലും നേപ്പാൾ, ഭൂട്ടാൻ, തുടങ്ങിയ ഹിമാലയത്തിലെ സമീപ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും അപൂർവ്വമായി കണ്ടുവരുന്ന ഏപിയോഫ്ലെബിഡെ കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ഒരു അനിസോസൈഗോപ്‌റ്ററ തുമ്പിയാണ് ഹിമാലയൻ റെലിക്ട് ഡ്രാഗൺഫ്ലൈ (Epiophlebia laidlawi). ഇവയിൽ കല്ലൻ തുമ്പികളുടെയും സൂചിത്തുമ്പികളുടെയും പ്രത്യേകതകൾ ഇടകലർന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.[2][3]

1918-ൽ സ്റ്റാൻലി വെൽസ് കെംപ് ആണ് ഇതിന്റെ ലാർവ ആദ്യമായി ഡാർജിലിങിൽ നിന്നും ശേഖരിച്ചത്. ലെയ്‌ദ്ലോ ഇത് എപിയോഫ്ലെബിയ എന്ന ജനുസ്സിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടതാണെന്നു തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. ടില്ലാർഡ് അതിനെ വിവരിക്കുകയും ഉചിതമായ പേര് നൽകുകയും ചെയ്തു.[4]

നേപ്പാളിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലുള്ള 6,000 മുതൽ 11,500 വരെ അടി (1,800–3,500 മീ.) ഉയരത്തിലുള്ള അരുവികളിൽ ഇവയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. മഞ്ഞ വരകളോടു കൂടിയ കറുത്ത ഉടലാണ് ഇവക്കുള്ളത്.[3] 2015-ൽ ഭൂട്ടാന്റെ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽനിന്നും ഇവയുടെ ലാർവകൾ കണ്ടെത്തി.[5]

ഇവയുടെ ലാർവ വളർച്ച പൂർത്തിയാക്കാൻ അഞ്ചു മുതൽ ഒൻപത് വർഷങ്ങൾ വരെയെടുക്കും. ലാർവകൾ ആകൃതിയിൽ കല്ലൻതുമ്പികളുടേതുപോലെയാണ്. ഇമാഗോ പറക്കുന്നത് വളരെ സാവധാനത്തിലാണ്. ഇണചേരുമ്പോൾ ആൺതുമ്പി പെൺതുമ്പിയെ പിടിക്കുന്നത് കല്ലൻതുമ്പികളുടേതുപോലെ തലയുടെ പുറകിലാണ്. പെൺതുമ്പി ബ്രയോഫൈറ്റ തുടങ്ങിയ സസ്യങ്ങളിൽ തനിച്ചാണ് മുട്ടയിടുന്നത്.[6]
