ചില ചെറിയ മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ കുറിക്കുന്ന സാധാരണ പേര്
മത്തി എന്ന വാക്കാൽ വിവക്ഷിക്കാവുന്ന ഒന്നിലധികം കാര്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അവയെക്കുറിച്ചറിയാൻ മത്തി (വിവക്ഷകൾ) എന്ന താൾ കാണുക. മത്തി (വിവക്ഷകൾ)

ലോകത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം പിടിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമായ കടൽ മത്സ്യമാണ് മത്തി. അഥവാ ചാള (Sardine). അഞ്ചുജനുസുകളിലായി 21 ൽക്കൂടുതൽ വിഭാഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ ഈ നാമത്തിൽ വിളിക്കുന്നു . ഹെറിംഗ് വിഭാഗത്തിൽ ക്ലൂപ്പൈഡേ (Clupeidae) കുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട മൽസ്യങ്ങളാണിവ. മത്സ്യബന്ധനത്തിലൂടെ ലഭിക്കുന്ന മത്സ്യയിനങ്ങളിൽ മൂന്നിലൊന്നുഭാഗവും മത്തിയാണ്.[1] സാധാരണക്കാരുടെ മത്സ്യമെന്ന അർത്ഥത്തിൽ 'പാവപ്പെട്ടവന്റെ മത്സ്യം' എന്നും മത്തി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ സാർഡൈൻ (Sardine) എന്നതുകൂടാതെ പ്ലിച്ചാർഡ് (pilchard) എന്നപേരിലും ഈ മത്സ്യം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. സാർഡിനിയ ദ്വീപിനുസമീപം ഇവയെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതാണ്, ഇവയ്ക്ക് സാർഡൈൻ എന്ന പേരുവരാൻ കാരണം.[2] ലോകത്ത് ഏറ്റവുമധികം മത്തി ലഭിക്കുന്നത് ആഫ്രിക്കൻരാജ്യമായ മൊറോക്കോയുടെ തീരത്താണ്. അറ്റലാന്റിക് സമുദ്രവും പസഫിക് സമുദ്രവും മത്തിയുടെ മുഖ്യ ഉറവിടങ്ങളാണ്.[3] പൊള്ളിച്ചും വറുത്തും അച്ചാർ ആക്കിയും മറ്റും മത്തി വിവിധരൂപത്തിൽ മനുഷ്യർ ഉപയോഗിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇവ ക്ലൂപിഡേ (Clupeidae)കുടുംബത്തിലെ ഹെറിംഗ് (herring)വർഗ്ഗത്തിൽപെടുന്നു.[4][5]ജലോപരിതലത്തിൽ കൂട്ടമായിക്കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവയുടെ മുഖ്യഭക്ഷണം ഫ്രജിലേറിയ എന്ന ഉത്പ്ലവജീവിയാണ്.

[6] ഒമേഗ-3 കൂടാതെ ജീവകം ഡി, കാൽസ്യം, ബി12, മാംസ്യം എന്നിവയും മത്തിയിൽ അടങ്ങിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[7] പ്രതിദിനം സാധാരണ കഴിക്കുന്ന മത്തിയിൽ നിന്ന് 13 ശതമാനം ജീവകം ബി 12 ലഭിക്കുന്നു.

In the 1980s the South American pilchard, Sardinops sagax, was the most intensively fished species of sardine. Some major stocks declined precipitously in the 1990s (see chart below).
