നയാഗ്ര നദി
ഈറി തടാകത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വടക്കൻ ദിശയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകി ഒണ്ടേറിയോ തടാകത്തിലേക്ക് പതിക്കുന്ന നദിയാണ് നയാഗ്ര. ഈ നദി കാനഡയിലെ ഒണ്ടാറിയോ പ്രവിശ്യ (പടിഞ്ഞാറ്) അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് (കിഴക്ക്) സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ തമ്മിലുള്ള അതിർത്തി സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നു. നദിയുടെ പേരിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവത്തെക്കുറിച്ചു വ്യത്യസ്തമായ സിദ്ധാന്തങ്ങൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ഇറോക്വിയൻ പണ്ഡിതനായ ബ്രൂസ് ട്രിഗർ പറയുന്നതനുസരിച്ച്, 17 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ അന്ത്യത്തിലെ നിരവധി ഫ്രഞ്ച് ഭൂപടങ്ങളിൽ, ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെ തദ്ദേശീയ ന്യൂട്രൽ കോൺഫെഡറസിയിലെ ഒരു ശാഖയിലെ ജനങ്ങളെ ‘നയാഗഗാരെഗാ’ ഈ പദം ഉപയോഗിച്ചു സൂചിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഈ പേരിൽനിന്നായിരിക്കണം നയാഗ്ര എന്ന പേര് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞുവന്നത്. ജോർജ് ആർ. സ്റ്റ്യൂവാർട്ട് പറയുന്നതനുസരിച്ച്, Ongniaahra എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഇറോക്വിസ് നഗരത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഇത് ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത് എന്നാണ്.[4] ചിലപ്പോഴൊക്കെ ഒരു ഇടുക്കായിപ്പോലും[5] വിവരിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ഈ നദി ഏതാണ്ട് 58 കിലോമീറ്റർ (36 മൈൽ) നീളമുള്ളതും അതിന്റെ സഞ്ചാര മാർഗ്ഗത്തിൽ നയാഗ്ര വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടംകൂടി ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നതുമാണ്.
