Madras treeshrew, Indian treeshrew എന്നെല്ലാമറിയപ്പെടുന്ന മരനച്ചെലി[4] (ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമം: Anathana ellioti) Anathana  എന്ന ജനുസിലെ ഏക ജീവി ആണ്. ഇവയെ മധ്യ ഇന്ത്യയിലെയും തെക്കേ ഇന്ത്യയിലെയും മലങ്കാടുകളിൽ കാണാം. ഇതിന്റെ ജനുസ് നാമം തമിഴിലെ  moongil anathaan (വാച്യാർത്ഥത്തിൽ "മുള അണ്ണാൻ") എന്നതിൽ നിന്നും സ്പീഷിസ് നാമം മദ്രാസിലെ ഇന്ത്യൻ സിവിൽ സർവ്വീസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്ന സർ വാൾട്ടർ എലിയട്ടിന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് വന്നത്.

16 മുതൽ 18.5 സെന്റീമീറ്റർ വരെ നീളമുള്ള മരനച്ചെലിയുടെ വാലിന് 16.5 മുതൽ 19.5 സെന്റീമീറ്റർ വരെ നീളമുണ്ടാവും.[5] [6]

പല്ലുകളുടെ സ്ഥാനം 2.1.3.33.1.3.3 × 2 = 38 എന്നായതിനാൽ ഒരു മിശ്രഭുക്ക് ഭക്ഷണരീതിയാണെന്നു അനുമാനിക്കാം.[7]

Tupaia എന്ന ജനുസിൽ ഇതിന്റെ പെടുത്താമെന്ന് ചില ശാസ്ത്രകാരന്മാർ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും മിക്കവരും ഇതിനെ പ്രത്യേകമായിത്തന്നെ നിലനിർത്തുന്നു.[8]

കാണുന്ന ഇടങ്ങൾ തിരുത്തുക

ഗംഗാനദിക്കു തെക്കുഭാഗത്താണ് ഇവയെ കാണുന്നത്. മൂന്നു ഉപസ്പീഷിസുകളെയാണ് വിവരിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളത്. A. e. ellioti പൂർവ്വഘട്ടത്തിലും, Biligirirangan മലകളിലും[9]  ഷെവരായ് കുന്നുകളിലും ഇന്ത്യയിലെ മറ്റു തെക്കൻ മലകളിലും കാണുന്നു. A. e. pallida മധ്യേന്ത്യയിൽ, പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും മധ്യപ്രദേശിലും റെയ്പ്പൂരിലും കാണുന്നു. A. e. wroughtoni - യെ സത്‌പുര മലനിരകളിലും മുംബൈയ്ക്കടുത്തും കാണുന്നു. ഇവയെ പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിൽ വയനാട്ടിലെ പേരിയയിലും മഹാബലേശ്വറിലും കണ്ടതായി റിപ്പോർട്ടുണ്ട്.[10] ഏറ്റവും വടക്കുനിന്നും ബീഹാറിലെ ഗർവാ ജില്ലയിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് കണ്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്.[11] പലയിടത്തുനിന്നും പലപ്പോഴായും കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇവ എത്രത്തോളമുണ്ടെന്ന് ശരിക്കും അറിയില്ല.[12]

ഇവ എപ്പോഴും മരങ്ങളുടെ മുകളിൽ ആവണമെന്നില്ല. മിക്കവാറും നിലത്ത് പ്രാണികളും വിത്തും തിരക്കിനടക്കുകയാകും.[14] രൂപവും വാലിന്റെ നിറവും നിവർന്നുനടക്കുമ്പോൾ മുന്നോട്ടുള്ള വളവും കൊണ്ട് ഇവയെ അണ്ണാന്മാരിൽ നിന്നും എളുപ്പം തിരിച്ചറിയാം.

പതിയെ മുകളിലോട്ടുകയറുന്ന ഇവ തല താഴോട്ടാക്കിയാണ് താഴോട്ട് ഇറങ്ങുന്നത്.[15] ഇതു ചിലപ്പോൾ മണം രേഖപ്പെടുത്താനാവാം, ഇവയുടെ മണം ഉൽപ്പാദിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഗ്രന്ഥികൾ കഴുത്തിലാണ്.

ചോരകുടിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പേൻ ആയ Docophthirus acinetus മരനച്ചെലിയുടേ ദേഹത്തുമാത്രമേ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളൂ. അതുപോലെ Tupaiidae കുടുംബത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങളെ ഈ ജനുസ് ജീവികളുടെ ദേഹത്തെ കാണാറുള്ളൂ.[16] Endoparasitic microfiliriae യേയും ഇവയിൽ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.[17] കിന്നരിപ്പരുന്ത് ഇവയെ ഇരതേടാറുണ്ട്.[18]
