റൈൻ നദി
യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളമേറിയ നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് റൈൻ (ഡച്ച്: Rijn; French: Rhin; ജർമ്മൻ: Rhein; ഇറ്റാലിയൻ: Reno; ലത്തീൻ: Rhenus; Romansh: Rain). സ്വിറ്റ്സർലാന്റിലെ ആൽപ്സ് പർവതനിരകളിൽ ഉത്ഭവിച്ച് നെതർലാന്റ്സിലെ വടക്കൻ കടലിൽ പതിക്കുന്ന ഈ നദി യൂറോപ്പിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട നദികളിൽ ഒന്നാണ്. സെക്കന്റിൽ ശരാശരി 2,000 ഘന മീറ്ററിലധികം ജലം പുറന്തള്ളുന്ന ഈ നദിയുടെ നീളം 1,233 കിലോമീറ്റർ (766 മൈൽ) ആണ്.[3][4]

റൈനും ഡാന്യൂബും ചേർന്നാണ് റോമാ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ വടക്കൻ അതിർത്തി രൂപവത്കരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അക്കാലം മുതൽ ഉൾനാട്ടിലേക്ക് ചരക്കുകൾ കടത്തുന്നതിനുള്ള ഒരു പ്രധാന ജലഗതാഗത മാർഗ്ഗമാണ് റൈൻ. ഒരു പ്രതിരോധമായും നിലകൊണ്ട റൈൻ പല അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര, ആഭ്യന്തര അതിർത്തികൾക്കും അടിസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു. റൈൻ നദിക്കരയിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ചരിത്രാതീതകാലത്തെ കോട്ടകൾ, ജലഗതാഗതമാർഗ്ഗം എന്ന നിലയിൽ അതിനുണ്ടായിരുന്ന പ്രാധാന്യത്തെ വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.
മൈൻ, നെക്കാർ, മൊസേൽ എന്നിവ റൈൻ നദിയുടെ പ്രധാന പോഷകനദികളാണ്.
