വേൾപൂൾ ഗാലക്സി

വിശ്വകദ്രു രാശിയിലെ സർപ്പിളാകൃതിയുള്ളതും പ്രതിപ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നതുമായ താരാപഥമാണ്‌ വേൾപൂൾ ഗാലക്സി. ഇതിന്റെ മെസ്സിയർ സംഖ്യ Messier 51a, NGC സംഖ്യ NGC 5194 എന്നിവയാണ്‌. സഹതാരാപഥമായ NGC 5195 ഉമായി ഇത് പ്രതിപ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു[4] . ഭൂമിയിൽ2 നിന്ന് ഏതാണ്ട് 2.3 കോടി പ്രകാശവർഷം അകലെയാണ്‌ ഇത് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ സർപ്പിളതാരാപഥങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണിത്. ബൈനോക്കൂലറുകളുപയോഗിച്ച് ഈ താരാപഥങ്ങളെ കാണാനാകും [5].

1774-ൽ ചാൾസ് മെസ്സിയറാണ് ഈ താരാപഥത്തെ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. സഹതാരാപഥമായ NGC 5195 കണ്ടെത്തിയത് 1781-ൽ പിയറി മെഷയ്ൻ ആണ്‌. സർപ്പിളാകൃതിയുള്ള ആദ്യത്തെ താരാപഥമായി ഇത് 1845-ൽ തിരിച്ചറിയപ്പെട്ടു. റോസെ പ്രഭുവാണ്‌ ഈ കണ്ടുപിടിത്തം നടത്തിയത്.
