പെനാങ്ക് ദ്വീപ്, മലേഷ്യയിലെ പെനാങ്ക് സംസ്ഥാനത്തു സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഏറ്റവും ജനപ്രീതിയുള്ള ദ്വീപ് നഗരമാണ്. 738,500 ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ഈ ദ്വീപ് നഗരം മലേഷ്യയിലെ ജനസംഖ്യയിൽ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലിയ നഗരവും, ഈ നഗരംകൂടി ഉൾപ്പെട്ട ഗ്രേറ്റർ പെനാങ്ക് 2.5 മില്ല്യൻ ജനസംഖ്യയോടെ രാജ്യത്തെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലിയ ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള മെട്രോപോളിസുമാണ്.[4] അതിൻറെ തലസ്ഥാനമായ ജോർജ്ജ് ടൗൺ 2008 മുതൽ UNESCO യുടെ ലോക പൈതൃക സ്ഥലമായി കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

1786 ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഈസ്റ്റ് ഇന്ത്യാ കമ്പനിയിലെ ഫ്രാൻസിസ് ലൈറ്റ് സ്ഥാപിച്ച പെനാങ്ക് ദ്വീപ്, ആദ്യം പ്രിൻസ് ഓഫ് വെയ്ൽസ് ഐലൻറെ എന്നായിരുന്നു അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിലെ ആദ്യകാല ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് അധീതനയിലുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൊന്നായിരുന്നു ഇത്. സിംഗപ്പൂർ, മലാക്ക എന്നിവയുമായി ചേർന്ന് ഈ ദ്വീപ് "സ്ട്രെയിറ്റ്സ് സെറ്റിൽമെൻറ്" ൻറെ ഭാഗമായിത്തീരുകയും 1867 ൽ ബ്രിട്ടിഷ് ക്രൌൺ കോളനിയായി ഉയർത്തപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു.

ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പണ്ടകശാലയും സുഗന്ധവ്യഞ്ജനനിർമ്മാണത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രാദേശിക കേന്ദ്രവുമെന്ന നിലയിലുള്ള ദ്വീപിന്റെ വികസനം പേരാനാക്കന്മാർ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള വിവിധ മത, ജാതി വിഭാഗങ്ങളെ ഈ ദ്വീപിന്റെ തീരങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്ക് ആകർഷിച്ചു. രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധസമയത്ത് ജപ്പാനീസ് സാമ്രാജ്യം ഈ ദ്വീപ് കീഴടക്കി, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ യുദ്ധാവസാനം ഇതു തിരിച്ചുപിടിച്ചു. 1957 ൽ ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരിൽ നിന്നും മലയയ്ക്കു സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ലഭിക്കുന്നതിനു തൊട്ടുമുമ്പായി, ജോർജ് ടൗണിനെ എലിസബത്ത് II രാജ്ഞി ഒരു നഗരമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. അങ്ങനെ ഇത് രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ ആധുനിക ചരിത്രത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ നഗരം ആയി മാറി. അതുമുതൽ പെനാംഗ് ദ്വീപ് 'കിഴക്കിന്റെ സിലിക്കൺ വാലി'യായി വികസിക്കുകയും  2015 ൽ ദ്വീപ് മുഴുവനായി നഗര പദവിയും നൽകപ്പെട്ടു.

മലേഷ്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട സാമ്പത്തികോർജ്ജ കേന്ദ്രമായി പെനാംഗ് ദ്വീപ് മാറിയിരിക്കുന്നു. നിരവധി ബഹുരാഷ്ട്ര കമ്പനികൾ നിലനിൽക്കുന്ന ബയാൻ ലെപാസ് നഗരം ഒരു പ്രധാന നിർമ്മാണ കേന്ദ്രമാണ്. എന്നാൽ ജോർജ് ടൌൺ രാജ്യത്തെ പ്രമുഖ വൈദ്യ വിനോദ സഞ്ചാര കേന്ദ്രമാണ്.[5][6][7]  ഇതുകൂടാതെ, നിരവധി അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര ബാങ്കുകൾ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന ജോർജ്ജ് ടൌൺ നഗരഹൃദയം വടക്കൻ മലേഷ്യയുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക കേന്ദ്രമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ, ഈ ദ്വീപ് അതിലെ വിവിധ സംവിധാനങ്ങളുമായി നന്നായി ബന്ധിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. പെനാംഗ് അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളത്തിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രധാന ഏഷ്യൻ നഗരങ്ങളിലേയക്കു് തുടർച്ചയായി സർവ്വീസുകളുണ്ട്.  ഫെറി സർവീസുകൾ, പെനാങ്ക് ബ്രിഡ്ജ്, രണ്ടാം പെനാങ്ക് ബ്രിഡ്ജ് എന്നിവ പെനാങ്ക് ദ്വീപിനെ മലേഷ്യൻ ഉപദ്വീപിലെ മറ്റു പ്രദേശങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. പെനാങ്ക് തുറമുഖം ലോകത്തെ 200 തുറമുഖങ്ങളുമായി വടക്കൻ മലേഷ്യയെ ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ച് ജോർജ് ടൌണിൽ ഒരു വിനോദസഞ്ചാര വ്യവസായത്തെ വളർത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.[8][9]

പദോദ്‌പത്തി തിരുത്തുക

പെനാങ്ക് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെയും പെനാങ്ക് ദ്വീപിന്റെയും പേര് അടയ്ക്കാ മരത്തിൻറെ (Areca catechu, family: Palmae) പേരിൽനിന്നു ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞതാണ്. ഇതിനു മലയൻ ഭാഷയില് “പിനാങ്” എന്നു പറയുന്നു.[10] ഈ ദ്വീപ് “പേൾ ഓഫ് ദ ഓറിയന്റ്” അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മലയൻ ഭാഷയിൽ പുലാവു മുട്ടിയാരാ (ദ ഐലന്റ് ഓഫ് പേൾസ്) എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.  

ആദ്യകാല മലയൻ വർഗ്ഗക്കാർ ഈ ദ്വീപിനെ പുലാവു കാ-സാതു (ഒന്നാം ദ്വീപ്) എന്നു വിളിച്ചിരുന്നു. ലിങ്ഗ, കേദാഹ് എന്നിവയ്ക്കിടയിലായി കടൽ മാർഗ്ഗത്തിലുള്ള ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ദ്വീപായിരുന്നതിലാനാണ് ഇങ്ങനെ വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചത്.[11]  സയാമീസുകാരും അതിനുശേഷം കെഡാഹ് സുൽത്താനേറ്റും ദ്വീപിനെ “”കോഹ് മാക്ക്’” (Thai: เกาะหมาก) എന്നുവിളിച്ചു. ഇതിനർത്ഥം അരിക്ക നട്ട് പാം ഐലന്റ് എന്നായിരുന്നു.[12][13] പതിനഞ്ചാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ  മിങ് ചൈനയിലെ അഡ്മിറൽ ജെംഗ് ഹെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന നാവിക ചിത്രലിഖിതങ്ങളിൽ ഈ ദ്വീപ് “ബിൻലാങ് യൂ” (ലഘൂകരിച്ച ചൈനീസ്: 梹榔屿; പരമ്പരാഗത ചൈനീസ്: 梹榔嶼) എന്നു വിളിച്ചിരുന്നു.[14][15]  പതിനാറാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ പോർച്ചുഗീസ് ഭൂപട രചയിതാവായ ഇമാനുവർ ഗോഡിൻഹോ ഡി എറെഡിയ ഈ ദ്വീപിനെ “പുലോ പിനാവോം” എന്നു വിശേഷിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു.[16]
