യോഹന്നാൻ എഴുതിയ സുവിശേഷത്തിന്റെ രചയിതാവിന് പരമ്പരാഗതമായി നൽകിയ പേര് ആണ് ജോൺ ദ ഇവാഞ്ചലിസ്റ്റ് (Greek: Εὐαγγελιστής Ἰωάννης, Coptic: ⲓⲱⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ or ⲓⲱ̅ⲁ). ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികൾ യോഹന്നാൻ അപ്പൊസ്തലനായും, ജോൺ ഓഫ് പദ്മോസ്, ജോൺ പ്രെസ്ബിറ്റർ എല്ലാം ഒന്നുതന്നെയാണെന്ന് സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും[2] ഇത് ആധുനിക പണ്ഡിതന്മാർക്കിടയിൽ തർക്കവിഷയമാണ് [3]
