ഉദയഗിരി-ഖണ്ഡഗിരി ഗുഹകൾ

ഭുവനേശ്വറിൽ നിന്നും 8 കിലോമീറ്റർ അകലെ ചെങ്കല്ലുകൾ നിറഞ്ഞ ഇരട്ടക്കുന്നുകളിൽ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഗുഹകളാണ് ഉദയഗിരി-ഖണ്ഡഗിരി ഗുഹകൾ. ബി.സി ഒന്നാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ കലിംഗ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ ഖരവേല രാജാവിന്റെ കാലത്താണ് ഈ ഗുഹകൾ നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്ന് കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. ഉദയഗിരിയിൽ 18 ഗുഹകളും ഖണ്ഡഗിരിയിൽ 15 ഗുഹകളുമാണുള്ളത്. മുമ്പ് കട്ടാക്കാ ഗുഹകൾ അഥവാ കട്ടക് ഗുഹകൾ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ഈ ഗുഹകൾ ഇപ്പോൾ ആർക്കിയോളജിക്കൽ സർവെ ഓഫ്‌ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സംരക്ഷണയിലാണ്‌.[1]

ശിലാലിഖിതങ്ങളിൽ 'ലെന' എന്നാണ് ഇവയുടെ പേര് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഒരുകാലത്ത് പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു ജൈന സന്യാസിമഠം ഇവിടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. 'റാണി ഗുംഫ' അഥവാ 'റാണിയുടെ ഗുഹ' എന്ന രണ്ട് നിലകളുള്ള ഒരു ഗുഹയും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. ഇത് വിപുലമായ കൊത്തുപണികളാൽ അലംകൃതമാണ്.
