മെഡൂസ
ഗ്രീക്ക് പുരാണത്തിൽ ഒരു വിചിത്ര ജീവിയാണ്‌ മെഡൂസ(/məˈdjuːzə, məˈdʒuː-, -sə/, US: /məˈduː-/; Μέδουσα "guardian, protectress")[1].മെഡൂസ രാക്ഷസരൂപിയായ,ഗോർഗോൺ,മനുഷ്യ സ്ത്രീയുടെതും ബീഭസ രൂപവുമായ,തലയിൽ പാമ്പുകൾ തലമുടിയായ,ആരെ കണ്ണ്‌ കൊണ്ട് നോക്കിയാലും അവർ കല്ലായി മാറുന്ന ജീവിയാണ്‌ മെഡൂസ. മിക്ക സ്രോതസ്സുകളിലും ഫോർസ്യ്സിന്റേയും സെറ്റോയുടെയും മകളാണ്‌ അവരെന്നാണ്‌ വിശദീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്[2] . എന്നാൽ ഹൈഗിനുസ്ന്റേയും ഫാബുലേയുടെയും രചനകളിൽ ഗോർഗ്ഗണിന്റേയും സെറ്റോയുടെയും മകളാണ്‌[3].

ഗ്രീക്ക് നായകനായ പെർസുസ് അവരുടെ തല വെട്ടുകയും ആ തല പിന്നിട് ആയുധമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു[4] . അതിനു ശേഷം പെർസുസ് ആ തല അഥീന ദേവതക്ക് നൽകി. അഥീന അത് തന്റെ പടച്ചട്ടയിൽ വച്ചു.പൗരാണിക കാലത്തെ മെഡൂസയുടെ തല പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്നത് ദുഷ്ട ശക്തികളെ നശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള ഉപകരണമായാതിനെ ഗോർഗോണിയൻ എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.
