അലക്സ് റെയ്മണ്ട് സൃഷ്ടിച്ചതും മൗലികമായി അദ്ദേഹം സ്വയം വരച്ചിരുന്നതുമായ ഒരു സ്പേസ് ഓപ്പറ സാഹസിക കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പിലെ കഥാനായകനാണ് ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡൻ.[1] 1934 ജനുവരി ഏഴിന് ആദ്യമായി പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ട ഇത് ഇതിനോടകം സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന ബക്ക് റോജേഴ്സ് എന്ന സാഹസിക കോമിക് സ്ടിപ്പിൽനിന്നും പ്രചോദനമുൾക്കൊണ്ട് അതുമായ മത്സരിക്കുന്നതിനായി സൃഷ്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.[2][3][4]

ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡൺ കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പ് ചലച്ചിത്രങ്ങൾ, ടെലിവിഷൻ, ആനിമേഷൻ പരമ്പരകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെ  വിവിധങ്ങളായ മാധ്യമങ്ങളിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതിന്റെ നിലവിലുള്ള ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ പതിപ്പ്, 2007-2008 കാലയളവിൽ സൈഫി ചാനലിലൂടെ സംപ്രേഷണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ‘ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡൻ” എന്ന ടെലിവിഷൻ പരമ്പരയായിരുന്നു.

ബക്ക് റോജേഴ്സ്’ കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പ് വാണിജ്യപരമായി ഒരു വൻ വിജയമായതോടെ ഇതു നോവലായി പരിണമിക്കുകയും ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കുട്ടികളുടെ കളിപ്പാട്ടങ്ങൾ പുറത്തിറങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു.[5] ഇതേത്തുടർന്ന് കിംഗ് ഫീച്ചർ സിൻഡിക്കേറ്റ് ഇതുമായി മത്സരിക്കുവാൻ അവരുടെ സ്വന്തമായ ഒരു സയൻസ് ഫിക്ഷൻ കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പ് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ചു.[6] ആദ്യം അവർ എഡ്ഗാർ റൈസ് ബറോസിന്റെജോൺ കാർട്ടർ ഓഫ് മാർസ്’ കഥകളുടെ അവകാശം വാങ്ങാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. ബറോസുമായി ഒരു സാമജ്ഞസ്യത്തിലെത്തുവാനോ കരാറിലെത്തുവാനോ സാധിച്ചതുമില്ല.[7] ഇതിൽപ്പിന്നെ കിംഗ് ഫീച്ചേർസ് തങ്ങളുടെ സ്റ്റാഫ് ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റായിരുന്ന അലക്സ് റെയ്മണ്ടിനെ ഒരു ഇതിവൃത്തം രൂപീകരിക്കാൻ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തുവാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[8][9]

ഫ്ലാഷ്‍ ഗോർഡൻ കോമിക്സ് സ്ട്രിപ്പിനുള്ള ഒരു ഉറവിടമായി കരുതപ്പെടുന്നത് ഫിലിപ്പ് വൈലിയുടെ “വെൻ വേൾഡ്സ് കൊളീഡ്” (1933) എന്ന നോവലായിരുന്നു. ഭൂമിക്കു ഭീഷണിയായി അടുത്തെത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ഗ്രഹവും ഒരു കായികാഭ്യാസിയായ നായകനും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കാമുകിയും റോക്കറ്റിലേറി പുതിയ ഗ്രഹത്തിലേയക്കു സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനുമടങ്ങിയതായിരുന്നു ഇതിന്റെ പ്രതിപാദ്യവിഷയം.[10] ഈ വിഷയത്തെ തങ്ങളുടെ കോമിക്സ് സ്ട്രിപ്പിന് അനുരൂപമാക്കിയെടുത്ത റെയ്മണ്ട് ഇതിവൃത്തത്തിന്റെ മൂലരൂപം സിൻഡിക്കേറ്റിനു സമർപ്പിച്ചുവെങ്കിലും കഥാഗതിയിൽ മതിയായ ആക്ഷൻ സീനുകൾ ഇല്ലാത്തതിനാൽ നിരാകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

റെയ്മണ്ട് കഥ തിരുത്തിയെഴുതി സിൻഡിക്കേറ്റിന് അയക്കുകയും സ്വീകരിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. അനുഭവസമ്പന്നനായ എഡിറ്ററും ഒരു കൂലിയെഴുത്തുകാരനുമായിരുന്ന ഡോൺ മൂർ എന്ന  സഹപ്രവർത്തകനുമായി ഇതിന്റ രചനയിൽ റെയ്മണ്ട് പങ്കുചേർന്നു.[11] റെയ്മണ്ടിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡൻ കഥ ജനുവരി 1934 ൽ ജംഗിൾ ജിം എന്ന കോമിക്കിനൊപ്പം പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡൺ കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പ് പത്ര വായനക്കാർക്ക് നന്നായി ബോധിക്കുകയും 1930 കളിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രശസ്തമായ അമേരിക്കൻ കോമിക് സ്ട്രിപ്പുകളിൽ ഒന്നായി മാറുകയും ചെയ്തു.[12][13][14] ബക്ക് റോജേർസ് പോലെ ഫ്ലാഷ് ഗോർഡന്റെ വിജയവും പോപ്പ്-അപ്പ് ബുക്കുകൾ, കളിറിംഗ് ബുക്കുകൾ, ശൂന്യാകാശനൗകാ മാതൃകകൾ, കളിത്തോക്കുകൾ തുടങ്ങി  അനേകം ലൈസൻസുള്ള ഉൽപ്പന്നങ്ങളുടെ വിൽപ്പനക്കായി ഉപയോഗിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി.[15]
