സോഫിയ ക്ലീഗ്മാൻ 1901 ജൂലൈ 8 ന് റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിലെ കീവിൽ ഇസ്രായേലിന്റെയും എൽക്ക സിയർഗുട്ട്സ് ക്ലീഗ്മാനിന്റെയും മകനായി ജനിച്ചു.[1] 1906-ൽ അവരുടെ കുടുംബം അമേരിക്കയിലേക്ക് കുടിയേറി. ന്യൂയോർക്കിൽ സ്ഥിരതാമസമാക്കി. 1920-ൽ ബെല്ലെവ്യൂ ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിലെ (ഇപ്പോൾ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി സ്‌കൂൾ ഓഫ് മെഡിസിൻ) രണ്ടാമത്തെ കോ-എഡ്യുക്കേഷണൽ ക്ലാസിലേക്ക് അവളെ സ്വീകരിച്ചു. 1924-ൽ ബിരുദം നേടിയ ശേഷം, അവർ ചിക്കാഗോ ലൈയിംഗ്-ഇൻ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ താമസം നടത്തി. അതിനുശേഷം അവർ ഗൈനക്കോളജിയും പ്രസവചികിത്സയും പരിശീലിച്ചു. 1929-ൽ ന്യൂയോർക്ക് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി കോളേജ് ഓഫ് മെഡിസിനിൽ ഒബ്‌സ്റ്റട്രിക്‌സ് ആൻഡ് ഗൈനക്കോളജി ഫാക്കൽറ്റിയായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഫാക്കൽറ്റിയിലേക്ക് നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ട ആദ്യ വനിതയായിരുന്നു അവർ. ആ വർഷം തന്നെ അവർ ബെല്ലെവ്യൂ ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിലെ അറ്റൻഡിംഗ് സ്റ്റാഫിൽ ചേർന്നു.[2]
