വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗം
ഇപ്പോൾ ഭൂമിയിൽ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന അഞ്ച് കാണ്ടാമൃഗ സ്പീഷിസുകളിലൊന്നാണ് വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗം (ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്:White Rhinoceros അഥവാ Square-lipped rhinoceros). മറ്റു കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് സമൂഹപരമായി കഴിയുന്ന ഒരു ജീവിയാണിത്. വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളിൽ തന്നെയുള്ള രണ്ട് ഉപവിഭാഗങ്ങളാണ് വടക്കൻ വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗവും (Northern White Rhino) തെക്കൻ വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗവും (Southern White Rhino). 2007 വർഷാവസാനത്തിൽ കാടുകളിൽ ഏകദേശം 17,480 തെക്കൻ വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട് എന്നാണ് 2008-ൽ ഐ.യു.സി.എൻ പുറത്തുവിട്ട കണക്കുകൾ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ വടക്കൻ വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങൾ കാടുകളിൽ നിന്ന് അന്യം നിന്നു പോയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇപ്പോൾ ലോകത്ത് ജീവിക്കുന്ന ആകെ എട്ട് വടക്കൻ വെള്ളക്കാണ്ടാമൃഗങ്ങളും മനുഷ്യരുടെ സംരക്ഷണയിലാണ്.[3][4]
