കോമൺ വെൽത്ത് മത്സരങ്ങളിൽ ആദ്യത്തേത് നടന്നത് 1930 ൽ [[1930 British Empire Games|ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് എമ്പയർ ഗെയിംസ് ]] എന്ന പേരിലായിരുന്നു.ഇതിൽ 11 രാജ്യങ്ങൾ പങ്കെടുത്തു. പിന്നീട് 1942 ല [[Canada|കാനഡയിലെ]] ‍ [[Montreal|മോണ്ട്രിയാലിൽ]] നടക്കേണ്ടിയിരുന്ന ഗെയിംസ് [[World War II|രണ്ടാം ലോകമഹായുദ്ധം]] കാരണം മാറ്റിവച്ചു. <ref>[http://www.commonwealthgames.org.au/templates/Games_HighAchievers.htm High Achievers].
