സാൾട്ടോ വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഉറുഗ്വേയിലെ സാൾട്ടോ ഡിപാർട്ട്മെന്റിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനമാണ്. 2011 സെൻസസ് പ്രകാരം 104,028 ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള ഇത് ഉറുഗ്വേയിലെ ഏറ്റവും ജനസംഖ്യയുള്ള രണ്ടാമത്തെ നഗരമാണ്.[1]

സ്ഥലവും ഭൂമിശാസ്ത്രവും
മൊണ്ടെവീഡിയോയ്ക്ക് ഏകദേശം 496 കിലോമീറ്റർ (308 മൈൽ) വടക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറായി റൂട്ട് 3 –ൽ, അർജന്റീനയിലെ കോൺകോർഡിയ നഗരത്തിന് ഏതിർവശത്ത് റിയോ ഉറുഗ്വേയുടെ കിഴക്കൻ തീരത്തായി നഗരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നു. നഗരത്തിന് 12 കിലോമീറ്റർ (7.5 മൈൽ) വടക്കായി സാൾട്ടോ ഗ്രാൻഡെ ഡാമിന് മുകളിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച സാൾട്ടോ ഗ്രാൻഡെ പാലം നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഇരുവശങ്ങളെയും ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
കുന്നുകളിലും മലഞ്ചെരിവുകളിലും നിർമ്മിച്ച, റിയോ ഉറുഗ്വേയിലെ 'ബിഗ് ജമ്പ്' വെള്ളച്ചാട്ടത്തിനടുത്തായ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന ഈ നഗരം, സാൾട്ടോ ഗ്രാൻഡെ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ സ്ഥാനവുമാണ്.[2] സമുദ്രനിരപ്പിൽ നിന്ന് ഏകദേശം 48 മീറ്റർ (157 അടി) ഉയരത്തിൽ, നദീതീരത്തോട് ചേർന്ന് താഴ്ന്ന തലത്തിലുള്ള പ്രദേശമാണിത്.
