ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കാട്ടാന
ആഫ്രിക്കൻ വനാന്തരങ്ങളിൽ മാത്രം കാണപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരിനം കുഞ്ഞൻ ആനയാണ് ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കാട്ടാന (ശാസ്തീയനാമം: Loxodonta cyclotis). വലിപ്പക്കുറവു മൂലം പിഗ്മി ആനകൾ എന്നും വിളിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. സവാന ആനകളെ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു ചെവികൾ ചെറുതും ഉരുണ്ടതുമാണ്. കൊമ്പുകൾ ചെറുതും നേരെയുള്ളതും ആണെന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല വായിൽ നിന്ന് അധികം പുറത്തേക്ക് വരാത്ത തരത്തിലുമായിരിക്കും.

ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കാട്ടാനകൾക്ക് കൂടിയത് 4,500 കിലോ (10,000 പൗണ്ട്) ഭാരവും മൂന്ന് മീറ്റർ (പത്ത് അടി) പൊക്കവും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. എങ്കിലും സാധാരണയായി ഇവ രണ്ടര മീറ്ററിൽ (8 അടി) അധികം പൊക്കം വയ്ക്കാറില്ല. മധ്യ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലും പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലും ഉള്ള മഴക്കാടുകളിലാണ് കാട്ടാനകളെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നത്. ചിലപ്പോൾ ഇവരുടെ അധിവാസം കാടിന്റെ അരികിൽ വരെ എത്തുകയും, തത്‌ഫലമായി സവാന ആനകളുടെ ആവാസമേഖലയിൽ അതിക്രമിച്ച് കടക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. പഠനത്തിനു പ്രതികൂലമായ അന്തരീക്ഷമാണ് ആഫ്രിക്കയിൽ ഉള്ളത് എന്നതിനാൽ സവാനകളേക്കാൾ വളരെക്കുറച്ച് വിവരങ്ങൾ മാത്രമേ ആഫ്രിക്കൻ കാട്ടാനകളെക്കുറിച്ച് ലഭ്യമായിട്ടുള്ളൂ.
