William Chapman Hewitson

വില്യം ചാപ്മാൻ ഹെവിറ്റൺ ( 9 ജനുവരി 1806, Newcastle upon Tyne - 28 മെയ് 1878, Oatlands Park, Surrey) ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പ്രകൃതിസ്നേഹി ആയിരുന്നു.^[1] വളരെ സമ്പന്നനായിരുന്ന അദ്ദേഹം വണ്ടുകൾ, ശലഭങ്ങൾ പക്ഷിക്കൂടുകൾ, മുട്ടകൾ എന്നിവ ശേഖരിക്കാൻ സമയം ചെലവഴിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹം സ്വയം ശേഖരിച്ചതും മറ്റു സഞ്ചാരികളിൽനിന്നും വിലക്കുവാങ്ങിയതുമായ ശലഭങ്ങളുടെ ശേഖരം അക്കാലത്തെ ഏറ്റവും വലുതും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടതുമായിരുന്നു.^[1]^[2] അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു മികച്ച ശാസ്ത്ര ചിത്രകാരനും ആയിരുന്നു.

ജീവചരിത്രം തിരുത്തുക

യോർക്കിൽനിന്നും വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം നേടിയ അദ്ദേഹം ^[1] ഒരു ഭൂ സർവ്വേയർ ആയി ജോർജ് സ്‌റ്റീഫെൻസന്റെ കീഴിൽ London and Birmingham Railway-ൽ ജോലിനേടി. മോശമായ ആരോഗ്യസ്ഥിതിയും ഒരു ബന്ധുവിന്റെ മരണംവഴി കൈവന്ന സമ്പത്തും ജോലി രാജിവച്ചു പിന്നീടുള്ള കാലം മുഴുവൻ ശാത്രപഠനത്തിൽ മുഴുകാൻ അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സഹായിച്ചു.^[1] അദ്ദേഹം കുറേക്കാലം ബ്രിസ്റ്റൽ, Hampstead എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ താമസിച്ചു. 1848-ൽ അദ്ദേഹം Oatlands Park-ൽ പത്തോ പന്ത്രണ്ടോ ഏക്കർ സ്ഥലം വാങ്ങുകയും അവിടെ ഒരു വീടുപണിത് പിന്നീടുള്ള കാലം മുഴുവൻ അവിടെത്തന്നെ താമസിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.^[1]

പാണ്ഡിത്യ സഹവാസം തിരുത്തുക

അദ്ദേഹം Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne -ന്റെ സ്ഥാപക അംഗവും ^[3] Entomological Society of London, Zoological Society, Linnean Society എന്നിവയിൽ അംഗവും ആയിരുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം പ്രാണിപഠനശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും പക്ഷിശാസ്ത്രത്തിലും ധാരാളം കൃതികൾ സംഭാവന ചെയ്തു.^[1]
