ഫൈബർ ഒപ്റ്റിക്സ് മേഖലയിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധനായ ഇന്ത്യൻ-അമേരിക്കക്കാരനായ ഒരു ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായിരുന്നു നരീന്ദർ സിംഗ് കപാനി (Narinder Singh Kapany) (ജനനം: 1926 ഒക്ടോബർ 31 - മരണം: 2020 ഡിസംബർ 4).[2][3][4] ഫൈബർ ഒപ്റ്റിക്സ് എന്ന പദം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ അദ്ദേഹം ഫൈബർ ഒപ്റ്റിക്സ് മേഖലയുടെ പിതാവായി അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു.[5][6] തങ്ങളുടെ 1999 ലെ ബിസിനസ്മെൻ ഓഫ് ദ സെഞ്ചുറി പതിപ്പിൽ ഫോർച്യൂൺ മാസിക അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ഏഴ് അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത നായകരിൽ ഒരാളായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരുന്നു.[3][7][4] 2021 -ൽ മരണാനന്തരബഹുമതിയായി ഇന്ത്യൻ സർക്കാർ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് പദ്മവിഭൂഷൻ പുരസ്കാരം നൽകി ആദരിച്ചു.[8][9]
