ഹാംഷയറിലെ പോർട്ട്‍സ്‍മൌത്തിൽ ഒരു വ്യവസായിയുടെ പുത്രനായി 1836 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 14 ന് അദ്ദേഹം ജനിച്ചു. സൌത്ത്‍സീയിലെ സെൻറ് പോൾസിൽ സ്റ്റോക്ൿവെൽ ഗ്രാമർ സ്കൂളിലും ലണ്ടനിലെ കിങ്‍സ് കോളജിലുമാണ് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം ചെയ്തത്.
