ചൊവ്വയുടെ രണ്ടു പ്രകൃതിദത്ത ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങളിൽ വെച്ച് ഏറ്റവും വലുതും ചൊവ്വയോട് ഏറ്റവും അടുത്തുകിടക്കുന്നതുമായ ഉപഗ്രഹമാണ് ഫോബോസ്. രണ്ടു ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങളും 1877ൽ ആണ് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. 11.1 കിലോമീറ്റർ ആരം ഉള്ള ഫോബോസിന്, ഡീമോസിനെക്കാൾ 7.24 ഇരട്ടി പിണ്ഡം ഉണ്ട്. ഗ്രീക്ക്‌ ഐതിഹ്യത്തിലെ ഏറീസിൻറെ(മാർസ് എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു) മക്കളിൽ ഒരാളായ ഫോബോസ് ('ഭയം' എന്ന് അർത്ഥം) എന്ന ദൈവത്തിൻറെ പേരാണ് ഈ ഉപഗ്രഹത്തിന് നൽകിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.

ആസഫ്‌ ഹാൾ എന്ന ജ്യോതിശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞൻ 1877 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്‌ 18ന് വാഷിംഗ്ടണിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്ന യുണൈറ്റഡ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ്സ് നേവൽ ഒബ്സർവേറ്ററിയിൽ വെച്ച് ഗ്രീൻവിച്ച് സമയം ഏകദേശം 09:14നാണ് ഫോബോസ് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്.[8][9][10] ചൊവ്വയുടെ മറ്റൊരു ഉപഗ്രഹമായ ഡീമോസിനെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതും ഇദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ. ഈ ഉപഗ്രഹങ്ങൾക്ക് പേരുകൾ നൽകിയത് ഹെൻട്രി മടൻ എന്ന വ്യക്തിയാണ്. ഗ്രീക്ക്‌ ഐതിഹ്യമായ ഇലിയഡിൽ നിന്നാണ് ഈ പേരുകൾ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്.[11][12]

സൗരയൂഥത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രതിഫലനം കുറഞ്ഞ വസ്തുക്കളിൽ ഒന്നാണ് ഫോബോസ്. സ്പെക്ട്രോസ്കോപ്പി ഫലങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച് ഫോബോസിന് ഒരു ഡി-തരം ക്ഷുദ്രഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകൾ ഉണ്ടെന്നു കാണുന്നു.[13] കൂടാതെ ഇത് ഒരു കാർബണേഷ്യസ് കോൺഡ്രൈറ്റിൻറെ ഘടനക്ക് സമാനവുമാണ്.[14] ഫോബോസിന് സാന്ദ്രത വളരെ കുറവാണ്. കൂടാതെ അതിനു വൻതോതിൽ പോറോസിറ്റി ഉള്ളതായി അറിവുണ്ട്.[15][16][17] ഈ കണ്ടെത്തലുകൾ, ഫോബോസിൽ ഉറഞ്ഞ മഞ്ഞുപാളികൾ ഉണ്ടാകാം എന്ന നിലപാടിലേക്ക് നയിക്കുന്നു. സ്പെക്ട്രോസ്കോപ്പി ഫലങ്ങൾ അനുസരിച്ച് ഉപരിതലത്തിലെ റീഗലിത് പാളിക്ക് ജലത്തിന്റെ അംശം ഇല്ല.[18][19] എന്നാൽ റീഗലിത് പാളിക്ക് അടിയിൽ മഞ്ഞു ഉണ്ടാകാമെന്ന ആശയം ശാസ്തജ്ഞർ തള്ളിക്കളഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല.[20]
