1537-ൽ ബ്രസീലിന്റെ [[പോർച്ചുഗീസ് സാമ്രാജ്യം|പോർച്ചുഗീസ് കോളനിവൽക്കരണത്തിന്റെ]] ആദ്യനാളുകളിൽ ആണ് റിനൈഫ് സ്ഥാപിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. കരിമ്പിന്റെ ഉത്പാദനത്തിന് പേരുകേട്ട അന്നത്തെ ക്യാപ്റ്റൻസി ഓഫ് പെർനാംബുക്കോ എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന പ്രദേശത്തെ മുഖ്യ തുറമുഖമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ബെബെറിബെ, കാപിബാരിബെ നദികൾ തെക്കൻ [[അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് മഹാസമുദ്രം|അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് സമുദ്രത്തിലേക്ക്]] ഒഴുകുന്നതിനു മുൻപായി ഉള്ള സംഗമസ്ഥാനത്താണ് നഗരം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഇത് അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് സമുദ്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന തുറമുഖമാണ്. പല നദികളും, ചെറിയ ദ്വീപുകളും 50 ലധികം പാലങ്ങളും ഉള്ളതിനാൽ ,റെസിഫ് നഗരത്തെ "ബ്രസീലിയൻ [[വെനീസ്]]" എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. 2010 ലെ കണക്കനുസരിച്ച്, [[മാനവ വികസന സൂചിക|മാനവ വികസന സൂചികയുടെ]] കാര്യത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന വടക്ക്-കിഴക്കൻ ബ്രസീലിലെ നഗരവും മൊത്തം വടക്കൻ മേഖലയിലെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നഗരവും ആണ് ഇത്.<ref>[http://www.atlasbrasil.org.br/2013/pt/perfil_m/recife_pe]</ref>
