ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് ഭാഷാ ശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജനും പുരാതനഇന്ത്യയിലെ പണ്ഡിതനും ആണ് സർ വില്ലിം ജോൺസ് (28 September 1746 – 27 April 1794).കാളിദാസന്റെ അഭിജ്ഞാനശാകുന്തളം ജയദേവന്റെ ഗീതാഗോവിന്ദം , മനുവിന്റെ മനുസ്മൃതി ,ഫിർദൌസിയുടെ ഷാ-നാ-മാ എന്നെ കൃതികൾ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലേക്ക് വിവർത്തനം ചെയ്തു.1784 -ൽ ഏഷ്യടിക് സൊസൈറ്റിഓഫ് ബംഗാൾ സ്ഥാപിച്ചു.
