ഗർഭാശയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ നിക്ഷേപിക്കുന്ന 'T'-ആകൃതിയുള്ള ചെറിയ ഉപകരണങ്ങളാണ് ഗർഭാശയവലയം അഥവാ ഐയുഡി (ഇൻട്രാ യൂട്രൈൻ ഡിവൈസസ്). സാധാരണയായി ചെമ്പോ പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക്കോ കൊണ്ടാണ് ഇവ നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നത്. ലൂപ്പ് എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഗർഭാശവലയം ദീർഘകാലം ഉപയോഗിക്കാവുന്ന ഒന്നാണ്. കൃത്രിമ ഗർഭനിരോധന മാർഗങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായ ഇത് എടുത്തുമാറ്റിയാൽ ഗർഭം ധരിക്കുവാനുള്ള കഴിവ് തിരിച്ചാക്കാവുന്ന ജനനനിയന്ത്രണത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും ഫലവത്തായ ഒരു മാർഗ്ഗം ആണ്.[1] പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് ഗർഭാശയവലയത്തിന്, ഉപയോഗത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യം വർഷത്തിൽ 0.2 ശതമാനം പരാജയത്തിന്റെ നിരക്കുകൾ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ ചെമ്പ് ഗർഭാശയവലയത്തിന് പരാജയ സാധ്യത ഏകദേശം 0.8 ശതമാനം ആണ്.[2] ജനനനിയന്ത്രണത്തിനുള്ള കൃത്രിമ ഗർഭനിരോധന മാർഗങ്ങളിൽ ഉപയോക്താക്കൾക്ക് മഹത്തായ സംതൃപ്തി നൽകുന്നു.[3] 2007-ലെ കണക്ക് പ്രകാരം ലോകത്താകമാനം പതിനെട്ട് കോടി ഉപയോക്താക്കൾ ഗർഭാശയവലയം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.[4]
മുൻപ് പ്രസവിച്ചിട്ടില്ലാത്ത കൌമാരക്കാരിലും[3] ഇവ ഫലപ്രദവും സുരക്ഷിതത്വവും ആണെന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.[5] ഗർഭാശയവലയം മുലയൂട്ടലിനെ ബാധിക്കുന്നില്ല, പ്രസവം നടന്നതിനു ശേഷം ഉടൻ തന്നെ ഇവ ധരിക്കുവാൻ സാധിക്കും.[6] ഗർഭഛിദ്രത്തിന്(പ്രസവം അലസിപ്പിക്കൽ) ശേഷം ഉടൻ തന്നെ ഇവ ധരിക്കുവാൻ സാധിക്കും.[7] ഒരിക്കൽ ദീർഘകാല ഉപയോഗം നടത്തിയിട്ട് ഗർഭാശയവലയം മാറ്റിയാൽ ഗർഭധാരണത്തിനുള്ള കഴിവ് സ്വാഭാവികമായി തിരിച്ചു വരുന്നു.[8]
ചെമ്പ് ഗർഭാശയവലയം ആർത്തവ രക്തസ്രാവത്തിനും വേദനയുള്ള കോച്ചിവലിക്കലിനും കാരണമാകാം.[9] ഹോർമോൺ ഗർഭാശയവലയം ആർത്തവം തടയുന്നതിനോ ആർത്തവ രക്തസ്രാവം നിലയ്ക്കുന്നതിനോ കാരണമാകാം.[6]
