പലസ്തീൻ വിമോചനത്തിനായി 1964 മുതൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവരുന്ന ഒരു സംഘടനയും കൂട്ടായ്മയും ആണ് പലസ്തീൻ ലിബറേഷൻ ഓർഗനൈസേഷൻ അഥവാ പി.എൽ.ഒ. (; Munaẓẓamat at-Taḥrīr al-Filasṭīniyyah). ലോകരാജ്യങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ പലസ്തീൻ ജനതയുടെ ഔദ്യോഗിക പ്രതിനിധാനമാണ് പി.എൽ.ഒ. നൂറോളം രാജ്യങ്ങളുമായി നയതന്ത്രബന്ധം നിലവിലുണ്ട്[4][5] 1974 മുതൽ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയിൽ നിരീക്ഷകാംഗമാണ്[6][7][8]. സായുധസമരത്തിലൂന്നി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്ന പാർട്ടി 1991ലെ മാഡ്രിഡ് ഉച്ചകോടിക്ക് ശേഷം ഇസ്രയേലുമായി സമാധാനചർച്ചകൾക്ക് സന്നദ്ധമായി. അതുവരേയും അമേരിക്കയും ഇസ്രയേലും സംഘടനയെ ഭീകരസംഘടനയായാണ് പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 1993-ൽ ഇസ്രയേലും പി.എൽ.ഒ യും പരസ്പരം അംഗീകരിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി[9].

1964-ൽ കൈറോയിൽ വെച്ച് നടന്ന അറബ് ഉച്ച്കോടിയിൽ നടന്ന ചർച്ചകളുടെ ഫലമായി അതേവർഷം ജൂൺ രണ്ടിന് പി.എൽ.ഒ രൂപീകൃതമായി. സായുധമാർഗ്ഗത്തിലൂടെ പലസ്തീന്റെ മോചനം എന്നതായിരുന്നു പി എൽ ഒയുടെ മുദ്രാവാക്യം[10][11].

അഹമ്മദ് ഖുറൈഷിയായിരുന്നു നേതാവ്. 1969 ഫെബ്രുവരി രണ്ടിന് ചെയർമാനായി ചുമതലയേറ്റ യാസർ അറഫാത്താണ് പി എൽ ഒ യെ ശക്തമായ സംഘടനയാക്കിക്കിയതും പലസ്തീൻ പ്രശ്നം ലോക ശ്രദ്ധയിൽ കൊണ്ടുവന്നതും. 2004 നവംബർ 11 ന് മരിക്കുന്നതു വരെ അദ്ദേഹം ആ പദവിയിൽ തുടർന്നു. വർഷങ്ങൾ നീണ്ട സായുധ പോരാട്ടമാണ് പി എൽ ഒ ഇസ്രയേലുമായി നടത്തിയത്.ചില ഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ജോർദ്ദാനും ലെബനന്നും ടുണീഷ്യയും കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചാണ് പി എൽ ഒ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചത്.1974ൽ പി എൽ ഒക്ക് ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയുടെ ജനറൽ അസംബ്ലി

യിൽ നിരീക്ഷണ പദവി ലഭിച്ചു. 1976- മുതൽ സുരക്ഷാസമിതിയിലെ ചർച്ചകളിൽ വോട്ടവകാശമില്ലാതെ പങ്കെടുക്കാനും അവകാശം ലഭിച്ചു. നോർവെയുടെ തലസ്താനുമായ ഓസ്‌ലോയിൽ 1993 ഓഗസ്റ്റ്  23 ന് ഇസയേലും പി എൽ ഒയും തമ്മിൽ ഒപ്പുവച്ച ഓസ്‌ലോ കരാർ സമാധാനത്തിന് വഴിവച്ചു. സെപ്റ്റബർ 13 ന് വാഷിങ്ടണിൽ യു. എസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് ബിൽ ക്ലിന്റെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യത്തിൽ ഇസ്രയേൽ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി യിഷ് താക്ക് റബീന്നും യാസർ അറഫാത്തും പൊതു ചടങ്ങിൽ വച്ച് പരസ്യപ്പെടുത്തി. ഇതനുസരിച്ച് പലസ്തീൻ അതോറിറ്റി രൂപീകരിച്ച് വെസ്റ്റ് ബാങ്കിലും ഗാസാ മുനമ്പിലും സ്വയം ഭരണ സർക്കാരുകളുണ്ടാക്കാൻ പലസ്തീൻകാർക്ക് അനുമതി കിട്ടി.
