തുർക്കിയിലൂടെയും ഇറാഖിലൂടെയും ഒഴുകുന്ന ഏകദേശം 400 കിലോമീറ്റർ (250 മൈൽ) നീളമുള്ള നദിയാണ് ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ്. (Arabic: الزاب الكبير‎ (al-Zāb al-Kabīr), Kurdish: Zêy Badînan‎ or Zêyê Mezin, Turkish: Zap, Syriac: ܙܒܐ ܥܠܝܐ‎ (zāba ʻalya)) തുർക്കിയിൽ വാൻ തടാകത്തിന് സമീപം താഴുകയും മൊസൂളിന് തെക്ക് ഇറാഖിലെ ടൈഗ്രിസിൽ ചേരുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിന്റെ ഡ്രെയിനേജ് ബേസിൻ ഏകദേശം 40,300 ചതുരശ്ര കിലോമീറ്റർ (15,600 ചതുരശ്ര മൈൽ) വിസ്തൃതിയുള്ളതാണ്. ഈ നദിയിലെ പ്രവാഹം അതിന്റെ പല പോഷകനദികളിൽ നിന്നും ജലം ശേഖരിക്കുന്നു. മഴയും മഞ്ഞുവീഴ്ചയുമാണ് പോഷകനദിക്കും നദിക്കും ആവശ്യമുള്ള ജലം ലഭിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിന്റെ ഫലമായി വർഷം മുഴുവൻ ഡിസ്ചാർജിൽ ഏറ്റക്കുറച്ചിലുകൾ സംഭവിക്കുന്നു. ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിലും അതിന്റെ കൈവഴികളിലും കുറഞ്ഞത് ആറ് ഡാമുകൾ ആസൂത്രണം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ ബെഖ്‌മേ ഡാമിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം ആരംഭിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഗൾഫ് യുദ്ധത്തിനുശേഷം നിർത്തിവച്ചു.

ലോവർ പാലിയോലിത്തിക്ക് മുതൽ സാഗ്രോസ് പർവതനിരകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതായി ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് തടത്തിലെ നിയാണ്ടർത്തൽ അധിനിവേശക്കാരുടെ ഷാനിദാർ ഗുഹയിലെ പുരാവസ്തു സ്ഥലത്ത് സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ക്രി.മു. മൂന്നാം സഹസ്രാബ്ദത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം മുതൽ ഈ പ്രദേശത്തെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചരിത്ര രേഖകൾ ലഭ്യമാണ്. നിയോ-അസീറിയൻ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ, തലസ്ഥാന നഗരമായ നിമ്രൂഡിന് ചുറ്റുമുള്ള സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ ജലസേചനത്തിനായി ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് ജലം നൽകിയിരുന്നു. ഉമയ്യദ് കാലിഫേറ്റ് അവസാനിച്ച സാബ് യുദ്ധം ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിന്റെ കൈവഴിക്കു സമീപമായിരുന്നു നടന്നിരുന്നത്. നദിയുടെ താഴ്വരകൾ ഇറാഖിലെ മംഗോളിയൻ ആക്രമണത്തിൽ നിന്നുള്ള അഭയാർഥികൾക്ക് അഭയം നൽകി. പത്തൊൻപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലും ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലും ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് തടത്തിൽ പ്രാദേശിക കുർദിഷ് ഗോത്രവർഗക്കാർ സ്വയംഭരണത്തിനായി മത്സരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.

തുർക്കിയിൽ ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് ഏകദേശം 3,000 മീറ്റർ (9,800 അടി) ഉയരത്തിൽ വാൻ തടാകത്തിന് കിഴക്ക് പർവതപ്രദേശത്ത് ഉയർന്ന് ഇറാഖിലെ ഇടത് കരയിൽ ടൈഗ്രിസുമായി ചേരുന്നു. [1][2][3] തുർക്കിയിൽ, ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് വാൻ, ഹക്കരി പ്രവിശ്യകളിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. ഇറാഖിൽ ഇത് കുർദിസ്ഥാൻ മേഖലയുടെ ഭാഗമായ ദുഹോക്ക് ഗവർണറേറ്റ്, എർബിൽ ഗവർണറേറ്റ് എന്നിവയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്നു. ടൈഗ്രിസിനൊപ്പം ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് എർബിൽ ഗവർണറേറ്റും നിനാവ ഗവർണറേറ്റും തമ്മിലുള്ള അതിർത്തിയായി കുത്തനെയുള്ള, പാറക്കെട്ടുകളിലൂടെ ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബ് ഒഴുകുന്നു. [4]അമാഡിയയും ബെഖ്മെ മലയിടുക്കിനും ഇടയിലുള്ള ദൂരം, ബെഖ്‌മേ ഡാം പൂർത്തിയാകാതെ കിടക്കുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെ സപ്ന വാലി എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നു. പദ്ധതി പൂർത്തിയായാൽ അതിൽ വലിയൊരു ഭാഗം ജലപ്രളയത്തിലാകും. [5] നിരവധി പർവ്വത അരുവികളും വാഡികളും വലതുഭാഗത്തും ഇടത് കരയിലും ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിൽ ചേരുന്നു. ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിന് അതിന്റെ ഭൂരിഭാഗം ജലവും ഇടത് കരയിലെ പോഷകനദികളായ റുബാർ-ഇ-ഷിൻ, റുകുചുക്, റുബാർ-ഇ-റുവാണ്ടിസ്, റുബത്ത് മവരൻ, ബസ്തുര ചായ് എന്നിവയിൽ നിന്ന് ലഭിക്കുന്നു. ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിന്റെ നീളം 392 കിലോമീറ്റർ (244 മൈൽ)[7][8] 473 കിലോമീറ്റർ (294 മൈൽ)[9] എന്നിങ്ങനെ കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നദിയുടെ ഗതിയുടെ ഏകദേശം 300 കിലോമീറ്റർ (190 മൈൽ) ഇറാഖിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. [7] ഗ്രേറ്റ് സാബിന്റെ ശരാശരി ഡിസ്ചാർജ് സെക്കൻഡിൽ 419 ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ (14,800 ക്യു അടി) ആണ്, എന്നാൽ പീക്ക് ഡിസ്ചാർജ് സെക്കൻഡിൽ 1,320 ക്യുബിക് മീറ്റർ (47,000 ക്യു അടി) വരെ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
