1967-ൽ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയ ഒരു മലയാളചലച്ചിത്രമാണ് ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ ആത്മാവ്. എം.ടി. വാസുദേവൻ നായർ രചനയും പി. ഭാസ്കരൻ സംവിധാനവും നിർവ്വഹിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ബോക്സോഫീസിൽ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടെങ്കിലും മലയാളസിനിമാചരിത്രത്തിലെ നാഴികക്കല്ലായി ചിത്രം വിലയിരുത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.^[1] ഭ്രാന്തൻ വേലായുധൻ എന്ന കഥാപാത്രത്തെ അനശ്വരമാക്കിയ പ്രേം നസീറിന്റെ പ്രകടനം ഏറെ നിരൂപകപ്രശംസ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റി.^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ ആത്മാവ് എന്നുതന്നെ പേരായ തന്റെ കഥയെ അടിസ്ഥാനമാക്കിയാണ് എം.ടി. വാസുദേവൻ നായർ തിരക്കഥയും സംഭാഷണവും രചിച്ചത്.^[6] അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സൃഷ്ടികളിലൊന്നായി ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ ആത്മാവ് വിലയിരുത്തപ്പെടുന്നു.^[7]
