വലിയ ഒരിനം നായ ജനുസാണ് അകിത ഇനു. ഇവ ഉരുത്തിരിഞ്ഞത് ജപ്പാനിലെ പർവ്വതനിരകളിലാണ്. ഇവയിൽ ഇപ്പോൾ രണ്ടു തരം ഉണ്ട്; ജപ്പാനീസ്‌ തരവും, അമേരിക്കൻ തരവും. 1957 വരെ ഇന്ന് കാണുന്ന അകിതയുടെ പുർവ്വികരെ ജപ്പാനിൽ കാട്ടുപന്നിയെയും, കരടി, മാൻ എന്നിവയെയും വേട്ടയാടാൻ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്നു.^[1]
