ആസ്റ്ററേസീ കുടുംബത്തിലെ 240 സ്പീഷിസുകളോളം അംഗങ്ങളുള്ള ഒരു ജനുസാണ് സ്റ്റീവിയ (Stevia) (/ˈstiːvɪə/, /ˈstiːvjə/ or /ˈstɛvɪə/)[2][3][4][5]. ഇവ അമേരിക്കൻ തദ്ദേശവാസിയാണ്. ഈ ജനുസിലെ പഞ്ചാരക്കൊല്ലി എന്ന ചെടി അതിന്റെ മാധുര്യത്താൽ വ്യാപകമായി കൃഷി ചെയ്തുവരുന്ന ഒരു സ്പീഷിസ് ആണ്. ഇവയിൽ നിന്നും വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന steviol glycosides ആണ് മധുരത്തിനു കാരണം.[6]

അമേരിക്കൻ വംശജനായ ഈ ജനുസിൽ 240 ഓളം അംഗങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്.[7] സ്പാനിഷ് സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനായ Petrus Jacobus Stevus (Pedro Jaime Esteve 1500–1556) ന്റെ പേരിൽ നിന്നാണ് ജനുസിന് ഈ പേര് ലഭിച്ചത്.[8] തെക്കേ അമേരിക്കയിൽ പണ്ടുമുതലേ പഞ്ചാരക്കൊല്ലി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്
