ന്യൂയോർക്ക് യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി മെഡിക്കൽ സെന്ററിലെ ഡോക്ടറും അസോസിയേറ്റ് പ്രൊഫസറുമായ മാർക്ക് സീഗൽ പറയുന്നു, “ഒരു ആശുപത്രിവാസത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് പലർക്കും ഭയം തോന്നുന്നതെന്തുകൊണ്ടെന്ന് ഇത് തികച്ചും മനസ്സിലാക്കാവുന്നതേയുള്ളൂ,” .“നിങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നിയന്ത്രണം ഒരു ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പ്രവേശിപ്പിക്കുന്നതുവരെ മാത്രമേ നിങ്ങൾക്കുള്ളൂ" എന്നതിനാലാണ് ഈ ഭയം. യുഎസ് പ്രസിഡന്റ് റിച്ചാർഡ് നിക്സൺ ആശുപത്രികളെ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നതായി അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. "ഞാൻ ആശുപത്രിയിൽ പോയാൽ ഒരിക്കലും ജീവനോടെ പുറത്തുവരില്ല" എന്ന് 1974 ൽ രക്തം കട്ടപിടിച്ചതിന് ചികിത്സ നിരസിച്ചതിനെ തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നുവത്രേ.
ഗ്രീക്ക് νοσοκομεῖον (നോസോകോമിയോൺ), "ഹോസ്പിറ്റൽ" [4], φόβος (ഫോബോസ്), "ഭയം" എന്നിവയിൽ നിന്നാണ് നോസോകോംഫോബിയ എന്ന വാക്കിന്റെ രൂപീകരണം.[5] [6]
