മേരി ആസ്റ്റെൽ (12 November 1666 – 11 May 1731) ഇംഗ്ലിഷുകാരിയായ സ്ത്രീപക്ഷ സാഹിത്യകാരിയും പ്രസംഗകയും ആയിരുന്നു. സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് വിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിൽ തുല്യ അവകാശം നൽകണമെന്ന നിലപാടെടുത്തതിനാൽ അവരെ ആദ്യ ഇംഗ്ലിഷ് സ്ത്രീപക്ഷക്കാരി ആയി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടുവരുന്നു.

മേരി ആസ്റ്റെലിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെപ്പറ്റി വളരെക്കുറച്ചു രേഖകളേ ശേഷിക്കുന്നുള്ളു. അവരുടെ ജീവചരിത്രകാരൻ ആയ റുത് പെറി വിശദീകരിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് : "(അന്നത്തെക്കാലത്ത്) ഒരു സ്ത്രീ ആയിരുന്നതിനാൽ, വാണിജ്യരംഗം, രാഷ്ട്രീയം, നിയമരംഗം തുടങ്ങിയ രംഗങ്ങളിൽ അവർക്ക് അധികമൊന്നും സ്ഥാനമുണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. അവർ ജനിച്ചു, അവർ മരിച്ഛു.; കുറച്ചു വർഷത്തേയ്ക്ക് അവർക്ക് ഒരു ചെറിയ വീടു മാത്രമേ സ്വന്തമായുണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു; അവർ ഒരു ബാങ്ക് അക്കൗണ്ട് നിലനിർത്തിയിരുന്നു. ചെൽസിയയിൽ ഒരു ജീവകാരുണ്യ സ്കൂൾ തുടങ്ങാൻ അവർ സഹായിച്ചു..." അവരുടെ നാലു കത്തുകൾ മാത്രമേ ഇന്ന് അവശേഷിക്കുന്നുള്ളു. അവ അവശേഷിക്കാൻ കാരണം അവ അന്നത്തെ പ്രശസ്തർക്ക് എഴുതിയതായതിനാൽ ആയിരുന്നു.

പീറ്റർ മേരി ആസ്റ്റെൽ ദമ്പതികളുടെ മകളായി മേരി ആസ്റ്റെൽ ന്യൂകാസിൽ അപ്പോൺ ടൈനെ എന്ന സ്തലത്ത് 1666 നവംബർ 12 നാണ് ജനിച്ചത്. അവരുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾക്ക് മറ്റു രണ്ടു മക്കൾ കൂടിയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ചെറുപ്പത്തിലേ മരിച്ച വില്ല്യമും ഇളയ സഹോദരൻ പീറ്ററും. ന്യൂകാസിലിലെ സെന്റ് ജോണിന്റെ ദേവാലയത്തിലാണ് മാമോദീസാ മുങ്ങിയത്. ഉയർന്ന മച്യവർഗ്ഗത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട കുടുംബമായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ പിതാവ് യാധാസ്ഥിതിക രാജപക്ഷ ആംഗ്ലിക്കൻ മതക്കാരനായിരുന്നു. പ്രദേശികമായ ഒരു കൽക്കരി കമ്പനിയുടെ ഉടമയായിരുന്നു.
