വൻകുടൽ
നട്ടെല്ലുള്ള ജീവികളിലെ ദഹനപ്രക്രിയയിലെ അവസാനഭാഗം നിർവഹിക്കുന്ന ദഹനേന്ദ്രിയമാണ് വൻകുടൽ. ഭക്ഷണത്തിൽനിന്ന് ജലവും മറ്റും വലിച്ചെടുത്ത് ദഹനയോഗ്യമല്ലാത്ത ബാക്കി ഭക്ഷണം മലവും മൂത്രവുമൊക്കെയായി ശരീരത്തിൽനിന്ന് പുറന്തള്ളുക എന്നതാണ് വൻകുടലിന്റെ പ്രധാന ധർമ്മം[1]. ഈ ലേഖനം പ്രധാനമായും മനുഷ്യന്റെ വൻകുടലിനെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്നതെങ്കിലും മിക്ക സസ്തനികളുടെ കാര്യത്തിലും ഇവിടെ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്ന പ്രക്രിയകൾ തന്നെയാണ് നടക്കുന്നത്.
