ഹെൽമിൻതോളജി
പരാന്നഭോജികളായ വിരകളെ (ഹെൽമിൻത്ത്സ്) കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനമാണ് ഹെൽമിൻതോളജി. ഹെൽമിൻത്തുകളുടെ വർഗ്ഗീകരണവും അവയുടെ ഹോസ്റ്റ് ആയ ജീവികളിൽ അവ ചെലുത്തുന്ന സ്വാധീനവും ഈ ഫീൽഡ് പഠിക്കുന്നു.
ഈ വാക്കിന്റെ ആദ്യ ഭാഗത്തിൻ്റെ ഉത്ഭവം പുഴു എന്ന അർഥം വരുന്ന ഗ്രീക്ക് പദം ἕλμινς(ഹെൽമിൻസ്) ൽ നിന്ന് ആണ്.
18-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലും 19-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിലും ഹെൽമിന്റോളജിയെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളുടെ തരംഗമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു; ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തെ ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ "സുവർണ്ണ കാലഘട്ടം" എന്ന് വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരായ ഫെലിക്സ് ഡുജാർഡിൻ,[1] വില്യം ബ്ലാക്‌സ്‌ലാൻഡ് ബെൻഹാം, പീറ്റർ സൈമൺ പല്ലാസ്, മാർക്കസ് എലീസർ ബ്ലോച്ച്, ഓട്ടോ ഫ്രീഡ്രിക്ക് മുള്ളർ,[2] ജോഹാൻ ഗോസ്, ഫ്രെഡറിക് സെങ്കർ, ചാൾസ് വാർഡെൽ സ്റ്റൈൽസ്, ഓർഡോൾ, കാൾസ് വാർഡൽ സ്റ്റൈൽസ്,[2] ജോഹാൻ ഗോട്ട്‌ഫ്രൈഡ് ബ്രെംസർ എന്നിവർ ഈ വിഷയത്തിൽ ചിട്ടയായ ശാസ്ത്രീയ പഠനങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിച്ചു.[3]
ജാപ്പനീസ് പാരാസൈറ്റോളജിസ്റ്റ് സത്യു യമാഗുട്ടി ഇരുപതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും സജീവമായ ഹെൽമിൻതോളജിസ്റ്റുകളിൽ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു; ആറ് വാല്യങ്ങളുള്ള സിസ്റ്റമ ഹെൽമിന്റം അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയത് ആണ്.[4][5]
