ഹെലൻ ഷർമൻ

ഹെലൻ പാട്രിഷ്യ ശർമൻ CMG, OBE, HonFRSC (ജനനം 30 മേയ് 1963) ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് രസതന്ത്ര ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയാണ്. ആദ്യ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ബഹിരാകാശ യാത്രികയും 1991- ൽ മിർ ബഹിരാകാശ നിലയം സന്ദർശിച്ച ആദ്യ വനിതയുമായിരുന്നു.

ഷെഫീൽഡിലുള്ള ഗ്രേനോസൈഡിൽ ജനിച്ച ഷർമൻ അവിടെ ജൂനിയർ, ഇൻഫന്റ് സ്കൂളിൽ ചേരുകയും തുടർന്ന് ഗ്രീൻഹില്ലിലേയ്ക്ക് മാറി. ജോർഡന്തോർപ്പ് കോംപ്രിഹെൻഷനിൽ പഠിച്ചശേഷം 1984-ൽ ഷെഫീൽഡ് യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റിയിൽ നിന്ന് രസതന്ത്രത്തിൽ ബി.എസ്.സി. ബിരുദം നേടുകയും ബിർകെബെക്കിലുള്ള ലണ്ടൻ സർവകലാശാലയിൽ നിന്നും പിഎച്ച്ഡി നേടുകയും ചെയ്തു. ലണ്ടനിലെ ജി.ഇ.സി ഗവേഷണ-വികസന സാങ്കേതിക വിദഗ്ദ്ധയായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് ചോക്ലേറ്റിന്റെ സുഗന്ധ സ്വഭാവം ഉള്ള ചൊവ്വയുടെ രസതന്ത്രശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞയായും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു.[1][2]

ആദ്യ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ബഹിരാകാശവാഹകർക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള അപേക്ഷകരുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഒരു റേഡിയോ പരസ്യത്തിലൂടെ എത്തിയതിൽ നിന്നും 1989 നവംബർ 25 ന് ഐ.ടി.വി.യിലെ ദൗത്യത്തിനായി ഏതാണ്ട് 13,000 അപേക്ഷകരിൽ ഹെലൻ ഷർമാനെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു.[3] [4][5]
