സാറ്റർണേലിയ
സാറ്റർനാലിയ ശനിദേവനെ ആദരിക്കുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടി നടത്തുന്ന ഒരു പുരാതന റോമൻ ഉത്സവം ആയിരുന്നു. ജൂലിയൻ കലണ്ടറിലെ ഡിസംബർ 17-നു നടക്കുന്ന ഈ ആഘോഷവേള ഡിസംബർ 23 വരെ നീണ്ടിരുന്നു. അവധിക്കാലം ശനി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ റോമൻ ഫോറത്തിലും പൊതുവിരുന്നിലും ഒരു യാഗമായി ഇത് ആഘോഷിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ഈ ആഘോഷം സ്വകാര്യ സമ്മാനം നൽകുന്ന, നിരന്തരമായ പാർട്ടിവിഷയവും വരെയെത്തി. ഒരു കാർണിവൽ അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിൽ :റോമൻ സാമൂഹിക മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങളെ മറികടന്നു ചൂതാട്ടം അനുവദിക്കുകയും യജമാനന്മാർ അടിമകൾക്ക് ടേബിൾ സേവനം അനുവദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.[1]
