1875 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 15-ന് വിർജീനിയയിലെ ഷാർലറ്റ്‌സ്‌വില്ലിലാണ് വെർട്ടൻബേക്കർ ജനിച്ചത്. 1933 മാർച്ച് 24-ന് മേരിലാൻഡിലെ ബാൾട്ടിമോറിലെ ജോൺസ് ഹോപ്കിൻസ് ഹോസ്പിറ്റലിൽ വെച്ച് അദ്ദേഹം ഒരു ചെറിയ അസുഖത്തെ തുടർന്ന് അന്തരിച്ചു.[1] അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് 1901-ൽ ജനിച്ച ചാൾസ് എന്നൊരു മകനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അദ്ദേഹം പിന്നീട് ടൈമിന്റെ വിദേശ പത്രാധിപരായി.[2]
