1666 സെപ്റ്റംബർ 2 ഞായറാഴ്ച മുതൽ സെപ്റ്റംബർ 5 വരെ ലണ്ടൻ നഗരത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടായ വിനാശകരമായ അഗ്നിബാധയാണ്‌ ലണ്ടനിലെ മഹാ അഗ്നിബാധ(ഇംഗ്ലീഷ്:Great Fire of London). ഈ തീപ്പിടുത്തത്തിൽ ലണ്ടൻ നഗരത്തിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രഭാഗങ്ങൾ മിക്കവയും കത്തിയമർന്നു.[1] പഴയ റോമൻ സിറ്റി മതിൽക്കെട്ടിലുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ പൂർണ്ണമായും വെ​ന്തുവെ​ണ്ണീറാക്കപ്പെട്ടു. പ്രഭുക്കന്മാരുടെ വാസസ്ഥാനമായ വെസ്റ്റ്മിൻസ്റ്റർ പട്ടണവും, ചാൾസ് രണ്ടാമന്റെ വൈറ്റ്‌ഹാൾ കൊട്ടാരവും, മറ്റു ചില ചേരി പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഈ തീ അപായം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുമെന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പിച്ചെങ്കിലും അവിടെ വരെ എത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല.[2] ഏകദേശം 13,200 വീടുകളും 87 പുരോ​ഹിത പള്ളികളും അഗ്നിക്കിരയായി. അതുപോലെ 1087-1314 കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ നിർമ്മിച്ച സെന്റ്, പോൾസ് പള്ളിയും ഒട്ടുമിക്ക അധികാരകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളും കത്തിയമർന്നവയിൽ‌പ്പെടുന്നു. നഗരത്തിലെ സ്ഥിരനിവാസികളായ 80,000 പേരിൽ 70,000 പേർക്കും അവരുടെ വാസസ്ഥാനം നഷ്ടമായി.[3] ഈ തീപ്പിടുത്തത്തിൽ ആകെ എത്ര പേർ മരണപ്പെട്ടു എന്നു ഔദ്യോഗിക കണക്കുകളില്ലെങ്കിലും മരണസംഖ്യ വളരെക്കൂടുതലല്ല, ഉറപ്പായ മരണസംഖ്യയായി രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത് ആറെണ്ണമാണ്‌. എന്നാൽ ഈ കണക്കുകൾ വസ്തുനിഷ്ഠമല്ലെന്നും പാവപ്പെട്ടവരും ഇടത്തരക്കാരുമായ ആൾക്കാരുടെ എണ്ണം ഇതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ല എന്നുമുള്ള വിമർശനങ്ങളുണ്ട്. തീയുടെ ചൂട് കാരണം ധാരാളം ആളുകൾ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്ന് അനുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു.

സെപ്റ്റംബർ 2 ഞായറാഴ്ച അർദ്ധരാത്രിക്കു ശേഷമാണ് പുഡിംഗ് തെരുവിലുള്ള തോമസ് ഫാർണിയർ ബേക്കറിയിൽ നിന്നും തീ പടർന്നു പിടിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങിയത്, ഈ തീ ലണ്ടന്റെ പശ്ചിമഭാഗത്തേക്ക് ദ്രുതഗതിയിൽ വ്യാപിച്ചു. അക്കാലത്തെ ലണ്ടൻ മേയറായ സർ തോമസ് ബ്ലഡ്‌വർത്തിന്റെ അവസരോചിതമായ തീരുമാനമെടുക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവുകേടുമൂലം അഗ്നിശമനപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ ആരംഭിക്കാനും ഏറെ വൈകിയിരുന്നു. ഞായറാഴ്ച രാത്രിയിൽ സജ്ജരായി നിന്ന അഗ്നിശമനപ്രവർത്തകരുടെ പ്രയത്നം വിഫലമാക്കുന്ന രീതിയിലായിരുന്നു അന്നു രാത്രിയിലെ കാറ്റ്, ശക്തമായ കാറ്റിൽ തീ ആളിക്കത്താൻ തുടങ്ങി. അങ്ങനെ തിങ്കളാഴ്ചയോടെ തീ മെല്ലെ വടക്കോട്ട് നീങ്ങി ലണ്ടൻ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഹൃദയഭാഗത്തേക്ക് പടർന്നു.

ഏകദേശം അഞ്ചുലക്ഷം തദ്ദേശീയരായ ആളുകൾ പാർത്തിരുന്ന ലണ്ടൻ 1660കളിൽ ബ്രിട്ടനിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പട്ടണമായിരുന്നു, ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ മറ്റ് അമ്പതു പട്ടണങ്ങളിലെ ആകെ ജനസംഖ്യ ഇതിലും താഴെയായിരുന്നു.[4] നയനാനന്ദകരവും, കൃത്രിമമായി തിങ്ങി നിറഞ്ഞതുമായ ലണ്ടനിലെ തടി വീടുകൾക്ക് അഗ്നി ഒരു ഭീഷണിയാണ് എന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് എഴുത്തുകാരനായിരുന്ന ജോൺ എവ്ലിൻ മുന്നറിയിപ്പു നൽകിയിരുന്നു.[5] എന്നാൽ നഗരത്തിന്റെ വർദ്ധിച്ചുവന്ന പുരോഗതി മൂലം പ്രതിരോധമതിലിന് അകത്തുള്ള ലണ്ടൻ കൂടുതലായി ജനസാന്ദ്രമായിക്കൊണ്ടേയിരുന്നു. വർദ്ധിച്ചു വന്ന സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യം മൂലം പതുക്കെ പല ചേരികളും ലണ്ടനിൽ ഉണ്ടായി, ഷോർഡീച്ച്, ഹോൽബോൺ, സൗത്ത്‌വാർക്ക് എന്നിവ അവയിൽ ചിലതാണ്. വെസ്റ്റ് മിനിസ്റ്റർ പട്ടണം വരെ ഈക്കാലത്ത് ലണ്ടൻ നഗരം വികസിച്ചു.[6]
