ജോർജിയൻ ജനതയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ട ഒരു ഉപവിഭാഗമാണ് മിൻഗ്രേലിയൻ ജനങ്ങൾ.[4][5][6][7][8][9] ജോർജിയയുടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ പ്രവിശ്യയായ സമെഗ്രിലോ (നേരത്തെ ഒഡീഷി എന്ന പേരിലാണ് അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്.) മേഖലയിലാണ് ഇവർ പ്രധാനമായും വസിക്കുന്നത്. 1991ൽ ജോർജിയയിൽ നിന്ന് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച, കരിങ്കടലിന്റെ കിഴക്കു വടക്കു ഭാഗത്ത് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന അബ്ഖാസിയയിലും ജോർജിയയുടെ തലസ്ഥാനമായ റ്റ്ബിലിസിലും ഇവർ നിലവിൽ താമസിച്ചുവരുന്നുണ്ട്. 1930ന് മുൻപുള്ള സോവിയറ്റ് സെൻസസിൽ ഈ ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളെ വംശീയ വിഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ് ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്.[10][11] മിൻഗ്രേലിയൻ എന്ന ഭാഷയാണ് ഇവർ സംസാരിക്കുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ, ഈ ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ മിക്കവരും ജോർജിയൻ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നവരാണ്. മിൻഗ്രേലിയൻ ഭാഷയും ജോർജിയൻ ഭാഷയും കാർട്‌വേലിയൻ ഭാഷാ കുടുംബത്തിലെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ്.[12][13][14]

ബിസി രണ്ടാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ ടോളമി ഇവരെ കോൾഷിസ് ജനങ്ങൾ എന്നാണ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. കരിങ്കടലിന്റെ തീരത്ത് നിലനിന്നുരുന്ന പുരാതന രാജവംശമാണ് കോൽഷിസ്. ഇന്നത്തെ പശ്ചിമ ജോർജിയയിലാണ് ഇപ്പോൾ ഈ പ്രദേശം. മധ്യ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ മിൻഗ്രേലിയൻസ് രാജാധിപത്യ വർഗ്ഗവും ക്രൈസ്തവ പുരോഹിത വിഭാഗവുമായിരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് ഇവർ സാധാരണക്കാരായി. 19ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യത്തോട് കൂട്ടി ചേർക്കുന്നതുവരെ മിൻഗ്രേലിയ സ്വയം ഭരണ പ്രദേശമായിരുന്നു. റഷ്യൻ സാമ്രാജ്യവും ആദ്യകാല സോവിയറ്റ് യൂനിയന്റേയും സെൻസസിൽ ഈ ജനവിഭാഗങ്ങളെ പ്രത്യേക വംശീയ വിഭാഗമായിട്ടാണ് പരിഗണിച്ചിരുന്നത്. 1930കളിൽ ഇവർ ജോർജിയൻ ജനത എന്ന ഒരൊറ്റ ഗാറ്റഗറിയിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി. സ്വതന്ത്ര ജോർജിയയുടെ പ്രഥമ പ്രസിഡന്റായിരുന്ന സ്‌വിയാദ് ഗംസകുർദിയ - Zviad Gamsakhurdia (1939-1993) മെഗ്രേലിയൻ വംശജനായിരുന്നു.[15]
