ഹരിയാന സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ജജ്ജർ ജില്ലയിലെ ഖുദാൻ ഗ്രാമത്തിലാണ് പുനിയ ജനിച്ചത്. [2][3] പിതാവിന്റെ പ്രോത്സാഹനത്തെ തുടർന്ന് ഏഴാമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഗുസ്തി പരിശീലനം ആരംഭിച്ചു. [4] നിലവിൽ അദ്ദേഹം ഇന്ത്യൻ റെയിൽവേയിൽ ടിടിഇ (ട്രാവൽ ടിക്കറ്റ് എക്സാമിനർ) തസ്തികയിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു. [3]

ന്യൂഡൽഹിയിൽ നടന്ന 2013 ഏഷ്യൻ റെസ്‌ലിംഗ് ചാമ്പ്യൻഷിപ്പ് പുരുഷ വിഭാഗം ഫ്രീസ്റ്റൈൽ 60 കിലോ ഇനത്തിൽ സെമി ഫൈനലിൽ ദക്ഷിണ കൊറിയയുടെ ഹ്വാങ് റയോങ്-ഹാക്കിനോട് 3-1ന് പരാജയപ്പെട്ട അദ്ദേഹം വെങ്കല മെഡൽ നേടി. [5] ഹംഗറിയിലെ ബുഡാപെസ്റ്റിൽ നടന്ന പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ 2013 ലോക ഗുസ്തി ചാമ്പ്യൻഷിപ്പ് ഫ്രീസ്റ്റൈൽ 60 കിലോ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വെങ്കല മെഡൽ നേടി. സ്‌കോട്ട്‌ലൻഡിലെ ഗ്ലാസ്‌ഗോയിൽ നടന്ന 2014 കോമൺ‌വെൽത്ത് ഗെയിംസിൽ പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ ഫ്രീസ്റ്റൈൽ 61 കിലോ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം വെള്ളി മെഡൽ നേടി. [6][7] 2018 കോമൺ‌വെൽത്ത് ഗെയിംസിൽ ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയയിലെ ഗോൾഡ് കോസ്റ്റിൽ നടന്ന പുരുഷ ഫ്രീസ്റ്റൈൽ 65 കിലോ വിഭാഗത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സ്വർണം നേടി. 2018 ഏഷ്യൻ ഗെയിംസിൽ പുരുഷന്മാരുടെ ഫ്രീസ്റ്റൈൽ 65 കിലോഗ്രാം വിഭാഗത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം സ്വർണം നേടി.
