ഖുറൈഷ് ഗോത്രത്തിലെ മുത്വലിബ് വംശത്തിൽ [[ഗാസ|ഗാസയിൽ]] ജനിച്ച ശാഫിഈ പത്തു വയസ്സിനോടടുത്ത് [[മക്ക|മക്കയിലേക്ക്]] നീങ്ങി. അവിടെ കുറച്ചുകാലത്തെ പഠനത്തിനുശേഷം മദീനയിലേക്കു പോയ അദ്ദേഹം [[മാലികിബ്നു അനസ്]] ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ളവരുടെ കീഴിൽ മതപഠനം നടത്തി. മുഹമ്മദിബ്‌നുൽ ഹസൻ അശ്ശയ്ബാനി ആയിരുന്നു ശാഫി‌ഈയുടെ ബഗ്‌ദാദിലെ പ്രധാന ഗുരു. ഹാറൂൻ അൽ റഷീദ് ഖലീഫയായിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് [[യമൻ|യമനിലെ]] നജ്‌റാനിൽ ന്യായാധിപനായി നിയമിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.
