19-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ റഷ്യൻ ഭരണത്തിൽ വളരെ സുസ്ഥാപിതമായ ഒരു പട്ടണമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. 1867 ൽ യു.എസ്. സെക്രട്ടറി ഓഫ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ് '''[[:en:William_H._Seward|വില്യം എച്ച്. സിവാർഡ്]]''' റഷ്യയിൽ നിന്ന് അലാസ്ക പ്രദേശം വാങ്ങുന്നതിനുള്ള ഇടപാടിൽ ഒരു ഇടനിലക്കാരനായി പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു. 7.2 മില്ല്യൺ യു.എസ്. ഡോളറിന് (ഒരു ഏക്കർ ഭൂമിക്ക് 2 സെൻറ് വച്ച്) വിലയിട്ടു. ഈ ഇടപാടിന് '''"Seward's folly",''' '''"Seward's icebox"''', '''"Walrussia"''' എന്നിങ്ങനെയുള്ള പേരുകളിട്ട് രാഷ്ട്രീയ എതിരാളികൾ വില്യം സിവാർഡിനെ കണക്കറ്റു പരിഹസിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ റഷ്യയുമായുള്ള ഇടപാടിന് ഏതാനു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം 1888 ൽ അലാസ്കയിലെ ആങ്കറേജിനു സമീപമുള്ള '''Turnagain Arm''' എന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത് സ്വർണ്ണ നിക്ഷേപം കണ്ടുപിടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1912 ൽ അലാസ്ക യുണൈറ്റഡ് സ്റ്റേറ്റ്സ് ടെറിറ്ററിയായി അംഗീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടു. 1920 നവംബർ 23 ന് ഈ പട്ടണത്തിന്റെ പേര് ആങ്കറേജ് എന്ന് ഔദ്യോഗികമായി നാമകരണം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടു. 1923 ൽ ഇതുവഴി അലാസ്ക റെയിൽ റോഡിന്റെ നിർമ്മാണം പൂർത്തിയായി. 1920 നും 1930 നു മിടയിൽ പട്ടണം സാമ്പത്തികമായി വളർന്നു. 1964 മാർച്ചു 27 നുണ്ടായ ഭൂകമ്പം ആങ്കറേജ് പട്ടണത്തെ ഇളക്കിമറിച്ചു. ഈ ഭൂകമ്പത്തിൽ 115 പേർ കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയും 311 മില്ല്യൺ (ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കണക്കനുസരിച്ച് 2.37 ബില്ല്യൺ) ഡോളറിന്റെ നാശനഷ്ടമുണ്ടായി. അഞ്ചു മിനിട്ടു നീണ്ടു നിന്ന കുലുക്കത്തെ അതിജീവിക്കുവാൻ മിക്കവാറുമുള്ള നിർമ്മിതികൾക്കു സാധിച്ചില്ല. ചരിത്രത്തിൽ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ട രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലിയ ഭൂകമ്പമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. താമസിയാതെ പുനർ നിർമ്മാണപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ വിപുലമായ രീതിയിൽ നടന്നു.

== ഗതാഗതസൌകര്യങ്ങൾ ==
2015 ലെ വിവരങ്ങളനുസരിച്ച് ഹോങ്കോങ്, മെംഫിസ്, ഷാങ്ഹായ് എന്നിവ കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ലോകത്ത് ചരക്കു നീക്കം നടക്കുന്ന വിമാനത്താവളങ്ങളിൽ ആങ്കറേജിലെ റ്റെഡ് സ്റ്റിവൻസ് അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളം നാലാം സ്ഥാനം അലങ്കരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ വിമാനത്താവളം 1951 ലാണ് പണി കഴിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഈ വിമാനത്താവളത്തിലൂടെ ഉത്തരാർദ്ധ ഗോളത്തിലെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട് എല്ലാ പട്ടണങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കും കുറഞ്ഞ ദൂരത്തിൽ സഞ്ചരിക്കുവാൻ പറ്റും. അലാസ്കയിൽ നിന്നുള്ള യു.എസ്. സെനറ്റർ റ്റെഡ് സ്റ്റിവൻസിനെ ആദരിക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടിയാണ് വിമാനത്താവളത്തിന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ പേരു നല്കിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. ഈ വിമാനത്താവളം 4,608 ഏക്കർ സ്ഥലത്ത് സമുദ്ര നിരപ്പിൽ നിന്നും 46 മീറ്റർ ഉയരത്തിൽ സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഇതു കൂടാതെ അലാസ്കയിലെക്കുള്ള ചരക്കുനീക്കത്ത്തിന്റെ സിംഹഭാഗവും നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നു ഒരു വലിയ തുറമുഖവും ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. ഓരോ വർഷവും ഭക്ഷവസ്തുക്കൾ, കെട്ടിട നിർമ്മാണ സാമഗ്രകൾ, കാറുകൾ, തുണിത്തരങ്ങൾ, സിമന്റ്, ഇന്ധനം തുടങ്ങി അലാസ്കയിലുള്ളവരുടെ ദൈനം ദിന വൃത്തിക്കുള്ളതും പൊതു ഉപയോഗത്തിനുള്ളതുമായി ഏകദേശം 3.5 മില്ല്യൺ ടൺ  കാർഗോ ഇവിടെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ തുറമുഖം കടൽ, ഹൈവേ, റെയിൽ, എയർ കാർഗോ വ്യൂഹം എന്നിവ പോലെയുള്ള വിവിധ ഗതാഗത സൌകര്യങ്ങളെ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കണ്ണിയായും പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ വിവിധ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലുള്ള ഏകദേശം ഇരുന്നൂറോളം സമുഹങ്ങളിലേയ്ക്കു് ഇവിടെ നിന്നുള്ള സേവനം ലഭ്യമാകുന്നു.  ആങ്കറേജിലെ തുറമുഖം അലാസ്കയുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക ഹൃദയമായാണ് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്.
