[[ശിവൻ|ശിവന്റെ]] നൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന ശിൽപ്പരൂപമാണ് നടരാജൻ. നാല് കൈകളും, പറക്കുന്ന മുടിച്ചുരുകളും, വലതു കൈയിൽ [[ഡമരു|ഡമരുവുമേന്തി]] [[അപസ്മാരപുരുഷൻ|അപസ്മാരപുരുഷന്റെ]] മേൽ ഒരു കാൽ ചവിട്ടിനിൽക്കുന്ന രൂപമാണിത്. വലതുകൈയിൽ [[അഭയമുദ്ര]] പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. തന്റെ പത്നിയായ [[സതി]]യെ ശിരച്ഛേദം ചെയ്തതിൽ ക്രുദ്ധനായി [[ശിവൻ]] താണ്ഡവ നൃത്തം ചവിട്ടിയതാണ് '''നടരാജനൃത്തം''' എന്നാണ് [[ഹിന്ദു|ഹൈന്ദവവിശ്വാസം]]. മറ്റു വിശ്വാസങ്ങൾ താഴെപ്പറയുന്നു:
ആനന്ദനൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന നടരാജന്റെ രൂപം ലോകത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ ചലനങ്ങളെയും നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്ന ഈശ്വരരൂപമാണ്. നടരാജന്റെ വലത് കയ്യിലെ [[ഉടുക്ക്]] പിറവിയുടെ ശബ്ദം പുറപ്പെടുവിക്കും. ഇടത് കയ്യിലെ അഗ്നി നാശത്തിന്റെ ചിഹ്നമാണ്. രണ്ട് കൈകളും സമനിലയിൽ ഉള്ളത് എന്തിനെയും തുല്യതയോടെ കാണണം എന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയാണ്. നടരാജന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലത് കൈ [[അഭയഹസ്തം]] കാട്ടുന്നു. ഈശ്വരനെ വിശ്വസിച്ചാൽ ജനനം മുതൽ മരണം വരെയുള്ള എല്ലാ ദുരന്തങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും ഈശ്വരൻ രക്ഷിക്കും എന്നാണ് ഇതിന്റെ സൂചന. നടരാജന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഇടത് കൈ തൂക്കിയ പാദത്തെ ചൂണ്ടികാണിക്കുന്നു. ഈശ്വരനെ പ്രാർഥിച്ചാൽ മായയിൽ നിന്നും മോചനം ലഭിക്കും എന്നതാണ് ഇതിന്റെ പൊരുൾ. നടരാജന്റെ വലത് കാൽ താഴെക്കിടക്കുന്ന അസുരനെ മർദ്ദിക്കുന്നത് തിന്മകളെ അതിജീവിക്കണം എന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയാണ്.

ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയില് കാണുന്ന നടരാജവിഗ്രഹങ്ങളിൽ എല്ലാം നാട്യശാസ്ത്രവിധിപ്രകാരമുള്ള കരണങ്ങളുടെ മാതൃകകൾ കാണാവുന്നതാണ്. ചിദംബരത്തിലെയും തിരുവിളങ്ങാട്ടെയും ആനന്ദതാണ്ഡവമൂർത്തി ഇരുപത്തിനാലാമത്തെ നൃത്തകരണമായ “ഭൂജംഗത്രസിത” മാതൃകയിലാണ്. കാൽ മടക്കിപൊക്കി മുക്കോണാഹ്ഹിതിരിച്ചും,അരയും കാൽമുട്ടും തിരിച്ചുമുള്ള നിലയാണ് ഈ കരണം. എല്ലോറയിലും അഷ്ടഭുജശിവൻ ‘ലളിത’ കരണത്തിലാണ്. തെങ്കാശി,താരമംഗലം എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ശിവൻ ‘ലലാടതിലകം’ എന്ന കരണത്തിൽ വിദ്യാധനൃത്തം ചെയ്യുന്ന മാതൃകയിലാണ്. ബദാമി, നല്ലൂർ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിൽ ‘ചതുര’ കരണത്തിലെ നടരാജനാണ്.
