1773- ൽ ബെറ്റി ഹെമിംഗ്സിന്റെ (1735-1807) മകളായി സാലി ഹെമിംഗ്സ് അടിമത്വത്തിൽ ജനിച്ചു. അവളുടെ പിതാവ് അവരുടെ യജമാനനായ ജോൺ വെയിൽസായിരുന്നു. (1715-1773).സാലിയുടെ അമ്മ ബെറ്റി ആഫ്രിക്കൻ അടിമയായിരുന്ന സൂസന്നയുടെയും ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് കടൽ ക്യാപ്റ്റനായിരുന്ന ജോൺ ഹെമിംഗ്സിന്റെയും മകൾ ആയിരുന്നു. <ref> "Memoirs of Madison Hemings".
