മഴയുടെ സിംഹഭാഗവും (83%) മൺസൂൺ വാതങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് ലഭിക്കുന്നത്. ശൈത്യകാലത്തു വടക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറുനിന്നെത്തുന്ന ചക്രവാതങ്ങളും അപൂർ‌‌വമായി മഴപെയ്യിക്കുന്നു. ഇവയുടെ തോത് വടക്കു പടിഞ്ഞാറു ജില്ലകളിലൊഴിച്ചാൽ, നന്നെ അഗണ്യമാണ്. ഹിമാലയമേഖലയിൽ 100-200 സെ.മീറ്ററും ഹിമാലയസാനുപ്രദേശത്ത് 100 സെന്റീമീറ്ററിലേറെയും ഗംഗാസമതലത്തിലെ പടിഞ്ഞാറെ പകുതിയിൽ 60-100 സെന്റീമീറ്ററും കിഴക്കരുകിൽ 100-120 സെ. മീറ്ററുമാണ് ശരാശരി വർഷപാതം. വർഷപാതത്തിന്റെ നിരക്കിൽ പ്രാദേശിക വ്യതിയാനം ധാരാളമാണ്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ദക്ഷിണഭാഗത്തുള്ള ഉന്നതപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും ഏതാണ്ടു 100 സെ. മീറ്ററോളം മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു. സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ ശരാശരി വർഷപാതം, 94 സെ. മീറ്ററും മഴപെയ്യുന്ന ദിവസങ്ങളുടെ ശരാശരി എണ്ണം 45-ഉം ആണ്. ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ മഴ ലഭിക്കുന്നത് നൈനിതാലിലും (269 സെ. മീ.) ഏറ്റവും കുറവ് (54.4 സെ. മീ.) [[മഥുര|മഥുരയയിലും]] ആണ്.
