[[മംഗോളിയ|മംഗോളിയയുടെ]] തലസ്ഥാനമാണ് '''ഉലാൻബാതാർ''' അഥവാ '''ഉലാൻ ബതോർ'''. ബോഗ്ദ ഊൾ പർവ്വതത്തിന്റെ താഴ്‍വരയിൽ സെലൻഗയുടെ പോഷകനദിയായ തൂൾ നദിയുടെ കരയിലാണ് നഗരം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്. 1639-ൽ സ്ഥാപിതമായപ്പോഴുള്ള നഗരനാമം ഊർഗ എന്നായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നത്തെ നഗരത്തിനു 400 കീ.മീറ്റർ അകലെയുള്ള ദാ ഹുറീ ബുദ്ധമത വിഹാരത്തിന്റെ ആസ്ഥാനത്തായിരുന്നു നഗരം സ്ഥാപിതമായത്. 18-ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ സ്ഥാനത്ത് നഗരം ഉയർന്നു വന്നത്. 1860-ൽ റഷ്യയ്ക്കും ചൈനയ്ക്കുമിടയിലെ തേയില വ്യാപാരപാതയിലെ പ്രധാന കേന്ദ്രമായി നഗരം വികസിച്ചു. 1921-ൽ മംഗോളിയ ജനകീയ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കായപ്പോൾ തലസ്ഥാനമായി. 1924-ലാണ് ഉലാൻബാതാർ എന്ന പേരു നല്കിയത്. ഉലാൻ എന്നാൽ ചുവപ്പും ബാതാർ എന്നാൽ നായകനുമെന്നുമാണർത്ഥം. ദാംദിനി സുബാതാർ എന്ന വിപ്ലവനായകന്റെ സ്മരണാർത്ഥമായിരുന്നു നഗരത്തിന്റെ പേരുമാറ്റിയത്. ചെങ്കിസ്ഖാൻ അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര വിമാനത്താവളം, നാഷണൽ യൂണിവേഴ്സിറ്റി ഓഫ് മംഗോളിയ എന്നിവ ഉലാൻബാതാറിലാണ് സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
